Cat 5 Wiring
Comments (15)cobra I would not call it an option, it is how the output of the satv box is plugged in. The satv box I have has a two coax inputs, 1 HD output (5 wires that would get plugged into the TV), and an addiitonal coax output coming off a second independent tuner that could go to a second TV (but the second output would not be a HD signal). If you take the HD outputs from the satv box and first run it into a cat5 signal conveter - you can send the HD signals anywhere you want up to 1000 feet away. This allows the satv box to be in one location and the tv to be in another - further than the HD signals can travel over standard HD cables. Why would that be an issue? Now as a byproduct of doing this, you can take the balanced digital signals that come out of the cat5 converter, split and amplify them. This is what some of the products I looked at do. You can also daisy chain theses amplifiers as well - expanding the number of locations that can receive the same HD signals. These amplifiers also provide a receive path to accept an IR input from a remote at the TV and send it to the central location where the satv box is located so you can control the channels and settings. I don't think there are any legal issues with this since it is the same signal being transmitted to multiple locations - but I have to admit never checked on that. I still have not found the product I was going to buy - and they link has a picture of how to connect it all up. IOnce I find it I will post it. The bottom line though is that cw doesn't need to worry about only having cat5 to his rooms. there are plenty of products out there that can transmit catv or satv signals over cat5. hopefully they ran at least 2 cat5 cables to each room....See Morerunning cat5 over existing rg6
Comments (15)I'm not sure of the regs but coax cable (the RG-6) should not be 'stapled' like conventional electrical cable because its characteristics change markedly if the cable is crushed or bent too sharply....that being said even if it wasn't stapled it's a huge risk to use good cable to try to pull new, you may end up with nothing in the wall or damaging the existing, any bending or crushing will ruin it. If running under the floor is not an option, what about through the ceiling? A few access holes may be worth the trouble of getting the place wired how you like it....and you've just made me think of another place (the tv spot of course) where I'd like to run ethernet cable to :)...See MoreCAT 5 Wiring
Comments (15)So you want two computers/devices hooked to the internet. Correct? Or do you just want to move the PC to the other room? I will assume you want to use 2 PC/devices. Instead of spending $30 on a tester your could use your modem. Is the closet with the CAT5 cables close to your modem? For instance, can you get a longer telephone cable and extension cord for the power that will allow you to place the modem near the bundle of CAT5 cables in the closet? If you can, then unplug the modem from the power and add in a long power extension cord. Make sure the telephone cable is is long enough to reach the closet or get one that is and replace the existing telephone cable that plugs into the modem and the wall. Do not unplug the PC from the modem quite yet. Power up the modem. Make sure your PC is back on the internet. Now unplug the PC ethernet cable from the back of the modem and plug it into the RJ45 on the wall. Carefully move your modem over to the bundle of CAT5 cables in the closet. Now find the cable that connects to that RJ45 by your computer by plugging the cat5 cables into the back of the modem 1 by 1 until the computer goes back on the internet. Hope this makes sense. If you only want to move your PC to the other room, you could move your PC to the other room. Plug it into the RJ45 in that room and then use the modem to find the right CAT5 cable as described above. If you want to have two or more devices sharing the modem then you need to add and ethernet switch in the closet. You will need a basic 5 port switch that can be bought online at NEWEGG or your favorite electronics store for about $20. I will stop here before describing the ether switch implementation. you can send me email directly if you want take this offline. Paul...See MoreNo cable. Do I need cable jacks in my new home?
Comments (23)Jn3344 - we are still under construction.. My builder decided that he would wait until he heard snow was in forecast (NJ) and then decided to rip out sidewalks.. We then uncovered a water leak and a sewer issue.. So now we are still waiting on water company to finish (going on 3 weeks) so that sidewalks can be poured and we can apply for temporary co.. It's been a mess and every time we get a glimmer of hope we get crushed by something.. It's just been an overall mess with this builder.. Guy had nice weather up until February and decides that's when he wants to do outside work.. It amazes me.. Basically the inside of house is complete.. Minor touch ups with paint and some misc items that need fixing.. But everything else inside is good to go.. Oh and we took a visit at site and uncovered this mess.....See Moresnuffycuts99
