Summer is a great time to tackle a renovation or decorating project. Low rainfall in many areas of the country means major outdoor projects won’t face delays, and mud or snow won’t be brought into the home during indoor renovations. And indoor decorating projects that adapt your home to warmer weather or just breathe new style into your life are timely. Either way, the Houzz community would love to hear about the remodeling or decorating projects you have planned — or are dreaming about — for this summer.

I would recommend glass shelves if they're adjustable but glass that could hold the weight of the books would be very expensive.
The upper section of the cabinets came with glass shelves that can hold a lot of weight. One cabinet has all my Bibles, references and study books. They take up 2 shelves, double deep. In 7 years there's no sign of the shelves failing.
If all of the shelves were glass and the back of the bookcase was lighter, then the whole thing should be a lot lighter inside. The light at the top should also do a better job of lighting the cabinets. I hope this helps.
I'm a big fan of small changes that make a big difference. For example, we moved into our new home right before Halloween and I decorated the formal living room as a library since it's got floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. I have tons of books that need a home and I'm more likely to use a library than I am to use a formal living room. The metals I used in decorating the room are gold and brass so I plan to replace the brushed nickel closed cabinet knobs on the bookshelves with brass ones. It won't cost much but I think it will really finish off the space.
