Prewiring a house. What cables and where to run them?
Comments (28)I work as a an electrician/teledata installer and can offer a few tips. Consider a central location to route all your cables in the entire house and use a residental media hub like the one Leviton sells it allows you to add various components based on your needs . Buy having all your cables and components in one location it allows for a convenient place to do all your switching, cross-connects and networking in one place, plus the ability to adjust for future technologies. You could add multiplexers for security, convert a future fiber optic internet connection into an Ethernet swich that coverts signal for distribution devices as needed and many others options. Cat 5e/6 cables offer a lot of flexibility, baluns are the peices that can be soldered or terminated on the ends of an cat5e/6 cable allowing it to adapt to hdmi and a wide array of other connection types. Other users who offered the advice on raceways are correct smerf tube is a good way to go be sure to get a pull string or something similar (I use 16 awg thhn electrical wire) installed before closing the walls. Best of luck. Here's link to leviton home media cabinets. Comments (2)my thingking... I'm inventive and handy with a ships auger and masonary bit! Add it as you need it. My wifi with 100% signal is actually moving around 5 mbyte/s across the room to/from the router. When I get fios I'm not going to be happy if I dont have at least one wired computer for large downloads. Probably wont be happy with my laptop wifi speeds. Takes it a long time now to move even a CD from the Desktop to laptop with wifi. Network cable is like WoW speed after using wifi. I keep a 100 foot network cable coiled at ready and stretch it out to my laptop for things like the soon coming xp sp3 upgrade (350mb) & also for that occasional DVD I want to download and watch. Wifi just is too slow for bigger byte stuff. Wifi DVD downloads and sending movies to set-top media center on wifi, sucks. Other than that kind of stuff, you're right. Don't really need a built in wired local LAN .. networking with all the wifi and other plug instant connect doohickeys is pretty simple, but definitely much slower. Someday you're going to find yourself with a 10 - 30 megaByte internet connection with fios or cable and you;ll not be able to utilize that connection to its potential with wifi though....See Moreethernet wiring, which cable to choose?
Comments (25)There may be some confusion since this there are a couple posts on this same installation. You can not connect a switch directly to the cable modem unless it is a "gateway" - a router is required. Even if it is a gateway they can be very problematic. The router connects the WAN (from the modem) to the LAN. The switch interconnects the devices on the LAN. Most current routers nowadays are optimized for streaming A/V as one of their features. They monitor their own built-in (switch) ports and prioritize data to help ensure smoother media flow. A switch on a router port, feeding multiple ports, will generally not receive this same prioritization. That is why I recommend connecting streaming media devices directly to the router. Streaming media on a home network from NAS makes no difference. The chain should be: cable modem, router (with it's ports feeding streaming media connections), and a switch connected to one of the router's ports, feeding the other network connections, for best overall performance....See MoreWhat's everyone doing for wiring - RG6 CAT6
Comments (4)We just had our pre-wring done. Cat6 and RG6 to each bedroom, and the study. A few runs of Cat6 and RG6 to the great room, and the rear covered porch. Also had some Cat5 run to each TV location for remote controls since the equipment will be in the basement. A few runs of Cat6 throughout the house for wireless access points. We also ran an HDMI cable to the great room. All of these wires were run to a location in the basement that will house all of my networking and AV equipment. You can not overdo this type of wiring. Also, we ran a 4 inch conduit from the basement to the attic for future wiring....See Moretulips33
