What's everyone doing for wiring - RG6 CAT6

Are you all putting RG6 and CAT6 in the bedrooms, or is this excessive?

For the home office, Is one RG6 and one CAT6 sufficient? At the most I can think of a wired computer, fax machine, and tv in the room. Fax machines are now eFax, and we could just use a cordless phone, and wifi seems to be perfectly fine.

There was a recent thread on the electrical wiring forum called pre wiring. It may be on page 2 of that forum now. Also if you read the July how is your build going you will see that their was a good discussion there too

Cat6 is not that difficult to terminate. It is somewhat more demanding than cat5e, but I would not trust someone who can't terminate cat6 to do my cabling anyway. I always have the same answer to questions like this: would you rather install cat6 and 10 years later realize you didn't need it, or install cat5e and wish you had cat6? Install more than you think you need during construction, unless it's cost prohibitive. In this case (and indeed in most cases), the incremental cost of cat6 is minuscule, because most of the cost is labor rather than materials (and labor is nearly the same for cat6). In most current applications it does not make a difference, but it does in some, and there may be more in the future. It is so much easier to run cable while the walls are open, that IMHO it's a complete no-brainer to "over-spec" a little bit to avoid regret and having to tear things up in the future. I've been through the project of adding cable to an existing home, and it is not fun. It involved literally hundreds of holes in drywall, all of which needed to be patched, texture matched and painted (not to mention the hours upon hours of labor I had to pay for the guys to fish cable through finished spaces).

We can't have dish in our development, so it will always be cable. What I really plan on doing is using a good ac router like the Apple airport extreme. I feel like ac wireless is plenty fast enough for me and wireless should only get faster. I currently have two rg6 cables running to the office...one for tv and one for the modem. I've also got rg6 running to all rooms where I might have a tv. I currently don't have cat wiring going to those rooms because as I said I plan on utilizing wireless. I have a wired phone in the kitchen and plan on having wireless handsets in other rooms.

my thingking... I'm inventive and handy with a ships auger and masonary bit! Add it as you need it. My wifi with 100% signal is actually moving around 5 mbyte/s across the room to/from the router. When I get fios I'm not going to be happy if I dont have at least one wired computer for large downloads. Probably wont be happy with my laptop wifi speeds. Takes it a long time now to move even a CD from the Desktop to laptop with wifi. Network cable is like WoW speed after using wifi. I keep a 100 foot network cable coiled at ready and stretch it out to my laptop for things like the soon coming xp sp3 upgrade (350mb) & also for that occasional DVD I want to download and watch. Wifi just is too slow for bigger byte stuff. Wifi DVD downloads and sending movies to set-top media center on wifi, sucks. Other than that kind of stuff, you're right. Don't really need a built in wired local LAN .. networking with all the wifi and other plug instant connect doohickeys is pretty simple, but definitely much slower. Someday you're going to find yourself with a 10 - 30 megaByte internet connection with fios or cable and you;ll not be able to utilize that connection to its potential with wifi though.

Cat6 is better than Cat5e. I spec'd Cat 6 but then 6 months later actually looked at the cable and realized the electrician put in Cat5e, which is very unfortunate. Cat6 gives you the ability to run network attached storage (NAS) at reasonable speeds. You could (either now or in the future) run drops to storage at 10Gb/s or higher, which would be great for a very fast video archive. For regular video, Cat5e would probably be good. Only Cat 6 is "officially" rated to run at 1 Gb/sec speeds, but Cat 5e can generally run that speed as well. I only run a single port into any room, and if I need more, I attach a small Gigabit switch. I guess you could do it either way. I have a drop in every room in the house where I might ever have a TV. I hadn't thoght about the IP cameras, but that would be a good idea if you're installing those. No need to waste wireless bandwith on that.

I'm doing conduit to the rooms...the upstairs kids/guests rooms will get an RG6 and a CAT5e (I see wireless connectivity surplanting 10GB over copper, little value in the extra expense and hassle of CAT6).

The main TVs get fed an HDMI instead of RG6, as the AV equipment is centralized.

But bottom line here is if you're not sure about long term needs, have a conduit put in. You can always pull new cable.

We just had our pre-wring done. Cat6 and RG6 to each bedroom, and the study. A few runs of Cat6 and RG6 to the great room, and the rear covered porch. Also had some Cat5 run to each TV location for remote controls since the equipment will be in the basement. A few runs of Cat6 throughout the house for wireless access points. We also ran an HDMI cable to the great room. All of these wires were run to a location in the basement that will house all of my networking and AV equipment. You can not overdo this type of wiring. Also, we ran a 4 inch conduit from the basement to the attic for future wiring.
