Recommendations Needed - New Washer and Dryer - Moving in 2yrs

Hi All - Been awhile since I've been around. My 17, going on 18, year old Fisher and Paykel GWL11 Top Loading Washer and corresponding dryer (rebadged GE) are starting to show their age. While still functional (more or less) I'm debating about the cost of fixing - by a pro, not me (already estimated in the hundreds of dollars) or replacing. However, we are planning on selling our house in 2 - 3 years. Where we live, the washer and dryer will be part of the sale.

The dryer is the most annoying at this point. The sensor I believe is gone so we can only use it on timed drying which doesn't seem to work as well and takes even smaller loads a minimum of 60 minutes to dry. The washer, which I do love, is starting to squeak when filling up but one of the pumps I think is dripping water into the tub basin when it is off. Can be just a little bit or up to an inch or more of standing water in the tub within a day or two. Not a huge deal but I just worry about one day it will just stop altogether given the age and these symptoms starting to show up.

Soooo... curious to hear thoughts on how you all would proceed but I'm also trying to prepare if I need to fully replace one or both with something decent, affordable that I can live with for a couple of years (i.e no SpeedQueen in my immediate future - maybe my next house). Washer has to be a top-loader and physically about the same size as my Fisher & Paykel.

There are no "pumps" involved in water dripping into the tub. There's a hot and cold water valve, each replaceable separately. The valves don't pump anything, they simply open or close to allow the incoming hot and/or cold water to flow or not. Either one can wear and fail to close fully, or get clogged with a bit of debris (such as sand/grit) in the water supply and fail to close fully. Shutting off the supply faucets when done using the machine will prevent the dripping ... although the suspect valve(s) may get worse and the dripping may increase to a more substantial flow.

A squeak when filling could be the main motor/basket bearing (the basket rotates at 25 RPM while filling, but also much faster during spin) ... or bearings going bad on the drain/recirculation pump, which runs for several mins during the Eco Active period at the start of all cycles except Perm Press, and of course also runs during drain and spin periods.

A failed auto-dry sensor won't have any affect on how long a load takes to dry on Timed. The heat and airflow operates exactly the same on both Auto and Timed ... the difference is the sensor controls the movement of the timer on Auto. The dryer has two heating elements, perhaps one of them has failed which reduces the heat input and that *will* result in a longer drying time.

For the dryer taking a long time on Timed Dry: have you cleaned out the exhaust duct and outside vent in the last few months? Lint buildup may be the culprit for long drying times. Sometimes there's a lot of lint buildup inside the dryer, too.

LG's WM3987 is the only full-size (27"w) combo W/D sold in the U.S.; fortunately it's a good one, (4.2 cu.ft. capacity, 1200 RPM spin, heats water up to 158F, has separate prewash/main wash/fabric softener/bleach dispensers). Several manufacturers sell shallower 24"w washer/dryers, but LG's WM3455 is probably the best, although it's rather pricey. It has 2.7 cu.ft. capacity, 1300 rpm spin, heats water to 158F, though lacks a separate bleach compartment. Looks to have a big door opening for a compact washer, though I haven't seen one IRL. Both of these run on 120V/15A, which means slow water heating and even slower drying, but also that it will plug into your apartment's nearby outlet if it isn't wired for 240V and may be advantageous if you're not allowed to add a 240V circuit. Fagor's FAS 3612 is a considerably less expensive choice, and faster because it runs on 240v power. Asko seems to have dropped their combo W/D, and the Eurotech clone thereof isn't sold anymore either. These had a poor rep for reliability anyway; they were made by a different branch of the company than other Asko laundry machines. Avoid anything that doesn't heat the wash water.

I'm sure you know that they don't make them like that anymore. Whether or not to bring them all comes down to what type of washer you want in your new build. If you prefer the traditional top load agitator type, you like how your Whirlpools perform, and you aren't averse to repairing rather than replacing if they break, I would absolutely bring them with you. You won't be able to find a true equivalent to them being made today, and the only one that's comparable in quality (Speed Queen) you will be paying through the nose for, both to buy it initially, and if it breaks down the road. Since there were so many Whirlpool direct drives made over the years, parts for them are easy to find, not too expensive and everyone knows how to work on them. They are a super easy to work on design, if you're the DIY type. If, however, you are thinking about making the switch to a high efficiency front load washer - no time like the present. I did it almost 20 years ago and haven't looked back.

Can you recoup the cost of either set? Renters aren't usually choosy about what they get but can be a pain in the rear if you opt for price over quality and the set requires repairs. While I prefer the bells and whistles on my own laundry equipment, I wouldn't expect renters to get top-of-the-line while I used sub-par, or older, equipment. If the average washer lasts about 10 years now then you may want to take that into consideration when making the decision. Cost will always be an issue. Due to my experience with Ropers and Hotpoints when I was a renter, I'll never buy either of those brands nor wish them on my worst enemy.

It washes very well and operates quietly. No complaints, we're pleased with it. It's 4.5 cubic feet in size, substantially more capacity than we'd ever use but like most front loaders, it measures the load and automatically chooses the water level so that running it 3/4s empty isn't a problem. We just need to remember to be stingy with the detergent for most loads but we do that anyway since using too much makes the fabrics dingy. On ours you can add extra rinses to most cycles and we often use that. As I think I said in the other thread, it's a solid performer but it doesn't compare to our Miele at our main home. It was also substantially cheaper to buy but that was our objective - to get something capable but on the low end of available price choices. We also bought a cheapo, non-matching bottom of the barrel gas dryer that was on sale and it works very well too. The Samsung offers just a few temp choices and doesn't have an internal heater as the Miele does. (I think Miele may have changed its current models but our washer runs on 220 volts. It was easy for the electrician though because there was already a 220 supply on the wall for an electric dryer that we don't use as we have a gas dryer.). To do a load on hot or really warm in the Samsung, we run the hot water tap in the adjacent sink until full-on hot arrives. I found an old email with a link to the Samsung model we have. As with most consumer product models, model designations are changed regularly and the one we bought is now shown to be "discontinued". I'm sure there are current models that are similar. I purchased a Samsung toploader (with impeller) and a Maytag Commercial with agitator. Both are terrible. The Samsung cannot clean whites properly. Our socks are filthy looking, even after several washes. The rest of the clothes seem okay. The Maytag was awful. Not sure if it was defective, but the agitator did NOTHING and the clothes pretty much sat still for the entire wash. If I could go back in time, I would repair my old Kenmore TL washer. It actually used water, the agitator was powerful, and it cleaned our socks!

Maybe find a good used top load set. Those machines last a long time and repairs are generally cheap.
