Campbell Green Pea Soup

I know this is discontinued but I did love it. I do not care for split pea or French Canadian style. Does anyone have a recipe for a smooth green pea soup?

I was lucky and scored the last dozen on clearance from my local store recently. I hadn't seen in in ages, then suddenly it showed up again already discontinued. Still in date too. So happy to have found it, and already trying to figure out homemade, lol.

I think in cooking to make the texture, it's mostly just the split green peas and broth. Cook till tender and remove a bunch, then puree the rest... and add the more whole peas back in. I think one could leave as chunky or smooth as they want, I do like the ratio Campbells uses. And it's definitely a different density and mix than the Campbells Split Pea with Ham... The two soups have different formulations.

You can always use an immersion blender to smooth out the texture.

2 weeks is a short time. It may or will take longer for it to clear. The bacteria will start to colonize and multiply as water temps rise.I haven't used the seeder bacteria and they grow naturally.( If I had a seeder bacteria company I'd tell you to use it all the time) The cycle will start or has started just takes time. I'm sure you'll get various replies like..filter size..pump size etc.all important questions but yhat is beyond my knowledge. The bacteria will feed on the ammonia and other nutrients that the fish produce. Have fun, the waiting is the hardest part.(fish love green water)

Well thanks ya'll. I just dug up this thread when ysop was looking for senate bean soup recipe. Glad you and your family enjoyed it Judi. Smiles. I eat soup for breakfast and lunch generally until I'm done with the curernt batch that is unfrozen. I just finished my first gallon of lentil soup, so tonight I am going to brine the beans for this bean soup. I just started brining the beans in the past six months or so and can't believe the difference. The skins are so much more tender and it takes a lot less time to cook the whole soup. The outcome is that you can cook it till the beans are tender without having all the skins come off and floating around. I had just bought a ham to use mostly for soups and froze quart bags of meat and skins to use, but also have the big bone, soooo.. this time I'm making 4 lbs at a time so I can use the big bone. Ah... happy camper. Time to start some artisan bread to go with.

In his defense, he has very bad digestion--ulcerative colitis, so I think he is always worried he is going to aggravate it/have a flare up. But then he limits himself so much food-wise that then he binges on something. Like when he was bragging that he didn't salt his food or like salty foods, I pointed out that the crackers, breads, boxed meals, ham and salami and canned soups he eats are more loaded with salt than any amount you would get from a casual sprinkling from the salt shaker. He just got mad at me and said, "I don't want to argue about it, I'm just saying I don't eat salt." I've tried for DECADES to get him to create some healthy eating habits for himself. It will never work, better and smarter people than me have tried too. But cooking for him is sure a roller coaster ride. Some of his lady friends and neighbors tried cooking for him right after mom died, but they soon gave up! I just do what I can, try to detach, as long as he's not wasting away not eating, there's not much I can do about the quality of what he eats. The more I push for something healthy the more he pushes back, that is just his nature.

The basic recipe for Turkish lentil soup is 6 mugs of water, one mug of red lentils, one onion, one carrot, spices of your choice. Put in pot and boil. Couldn't get any easier, but for a regular recipe I love this one: https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipe/turkish-red-lentil-soup But I generally make a variation on this recipe, since I always have lots of chard and I have to travel to get red lentils. Our local store only carries green and brown: http://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/lentil-and-swiss-chard-soup But I agree with everyone else--it's well worth the trouble to make your own soup. I make a big pot then freeze it in my muffin tins, then put in freezer bags to store. Each indentation holds half a cup (mine are from the days before a muffin became meal so YMMV), so I just grab two of them for a cup of soup.

Look for Batchelors Mushy Peas in a tin. They come from England where mushy peas are served with things like fish and chips. The peas will still be whole, but soft, so use whatever potato masher you have to smush them up like mashed potatos. You can add a bit of water or milk to your preference. In Canada or the US you're likely to find them in the international isle of a grocery store.

There are lots of green pea soup recipes out there which use fresh or frozen peas. I know I made one a couple of years ago which was quite yummy but I couldn’t tell you what recipe I used.

Edited to add: It may have been this one:

I wouldn’t use split peas because even the green ones (and it’s really just a question of how long the dried peas have been exposed to light, which yellows them) will have a starchiness to them which I suspect is what you didn’t care for.
