Need help with living room layout

I am trying to figure out new furniture for my living room. We are moving the current furniture downstairs to our lounge area but I was moving it around to try to get ideas on different layouts. I’m thinking a sectional with a larger rug and then a chair or two on the side by the left or right of the fireplace. The room is an odd layout with vaulted ceilings. There is also a 4-5ft nook of wasted space behind the couch. We have had toys back there but are moving those to the basement too. We have a formal living room as well so we still wanting this to be comfortable but a good middle ground. No recliners this time. Thoughts? Ideas? I don’t know if it looks good to have the rug straight, I used to have it parallel to the fireplace. My husband will not move the tv either...

I can see watching your TV from a recliner, but seems to be a bit high for an ordinary or sectional sofa. Have you tried the couch where you have the two chairs and then put one chair where the couch is now and the other where the light grey chair is....put a floor lamp by the chair by the fireplace and a table and lamp by the chair where the couch is now.. I know you said you were getting new furniture but this is just an idea for what you have now. Since toys will be moved, your room may look bigger.

The wall where that one chair is sitting now is short, there’s actually a hallway there and my stairs come down right there too. It’s an odd layout.

Hi. It is a challenging space. Your layout options did not post. When designing a space, it has to both function and look good. There is no sense in adding decor until you have a functional floor plan and right now, you do not. I can help, if you can give more information 1) Photos of the other walls of the room. 2) Do you have to keep the sofa with the chaise? 3) Is the sliding door used? 4) How many people must be accommodated to sit in the space on a regular basis? Keep in mind that you are thinking of starting a family in the next year. You may want to consider holding off on a coffee table and having several end tables so you can place a play mat down in the center of the room and have a place to set bottles etc. and baby monitor next to you. Leave space for a baby swing and a play pen to be later exchanged for cube storage for toys. I may consider placing the TV on the wall flanking the chaise portion of your sofa with something under it that can be later used for toy storage. A TV over the fireplace is pretty high for toddlers to watch. Just thinking of the baby shark video and my niece interacting with it - dancing, running and hiding, celebrating when she is safe . . . and all the other learning programs that she loves watching and interacting with while watching. Maybe visit a few friends with babies and toddlers and find out what works for them before making any final decisions. I like the idea of a sofa and two chairs because it is more flexible.

nice after shot. beautiful floors. honestly, I'd get a diff sofa. that one just doesn't fit the style or the size, of the home. remember w/area rugs, it shouldn't look like a 'floating carpet getting ready to go for a ride"! it needs to be anchored. a coffee table, push it further under the sofa, put some chairs in the corners, etc. are those drapes needed in the nook area? they close it off a bit. you could do a little seating area w/plants or build some simple built in benches this type of look or, remove the drapes, try and find a small loveseat that fits in that nook and use it for extra seating

The amount of seating and placement is not doing your room any favors. Maybe try your settee under window, remove all the items in corner and place one of the matching tables there with a lamp. Place matching chairs facing settee with the second matching table between them and add a coffee table. With wanting to keep chair/ottoman, could you move the curio to the right a bit and place where dining chair is. Ignore the extra two chairs in picture and with your credenza (vs fireplace) it would feel similar to this room.

That does look like a tough room. I’d suggest bigger rug & smaller furniture. Maybe your new furniture could add some color – there’s a lot of gray there. The TV looks high, do you need a TV in this room or can you move it to your lounge? I hate to see a beautiful fireplace & mantle w/ a big TV on top – but understand sometimes that’s your only option. A sectional might work, or maybe a small-scale sofa (where your sofa is now) w/ a console behind it, facing 2 arm chairs??

Use some blue tape to represent the tv placed on the wall where the bench is. sitting eye level. With a console under tv. He might actually like it when placed properly.

Hi Annabelle, I'm Neha. I created a mock up of your room and came up with the following layout. Since its a small place I wouldn't recommend a sectional. Maybe a 3 seater sofa and two swivel chairs would work well. The height at which the TV right now might not be very comfortable. I recommend you mount the TV to the wall next to the fireplace. Place two ottomans near the fireplace for extra seating. Since I was not very clear on the nook behind the sofa, I've left that as space for storage. It would be best to keep all your furniture compact. You can also place a table and chair and make it a working/reading space. I could help you with more layouts and furniture suggestions if required.
