Need help with living room layout/furniture purchases
We recently moved into a new house and are looking to buy new furniture for the space (not to mention I have been waiting for the right time to convince my husband to sell the enormous ugly sectional he bought before we met). I am having trouble deciding whether to buy 1 or 2 sofas, or a sectional, or some other combination of furniture. We are only 2 adults (may be trying for a baby in the next year or so), and it's important to us to have a comfortable gathering space for conversations and games with a few friends.
Based on the layout of the room, which is open concept with the kitchen, I have considered placing a sofa facing the fireplace, along with 2 accent chairs; or doing 2 sofas with the second along the wall. But there seem to be endless other options. We will be mounting the TV over the fireplace, and it's important to us to be able to comfortably watch TV.
Here is a photo of the space with our existing furniture, and some layout options I have considered. Please note that we have already ordered a 9x12 rug to better fit the space :) Any advice appreciated!

2 years agoA 3-seat sofa and two chairs is the most flexible basic seating. I like #2 above but with TV where the chairs are and chairs as in #1 or 3. Do this at the fireplace for a game spot.

Comments (5)I am looking for decor and furniture layout ideas for the living room. We want to paint it in shades of a warm white. The trim is painted in SW Dover white. The living room faces the north east. We do not get much light. The size is 21x13. I would like to separate the space into 2 areas: one for the piano and a conversation area around the fireplace. But that is not final. My husband suggests to put an L-shaped sectional against one wall. Then place a television on a console table, against the wall that currently has the piano. I think the tv belongs in the basement :) We like the more contemporary style: couches with legs and not bulky. We plan to repaint the dining room and the rest of the house also. 2 years agoBelow are some of the designs we have done for clients. Please note the furniture used and various layouts. It might work best to see where you want to TV first and then decide on furniture (as if you want the TV on the wall instead of fireplace, a sectional might work best).

2 years agoThanks to everyone who offered their advice. It’s been a couple months now and we have made good progress! Just wanted to post an “after” picture for anyone who cares :) we still need to apply some final touches, like an ottoman/footstool, and a bigger coffee table, plus some frames on the wall. But overall we’re happy with how it’s turning out!
