Need help with living room layout
My husband and I are renovating a family home that was built in the 1890's.. The living room is complete, but we are unsure on how to situate furniture due to the front window nook and two door openings.. We have been using our large sectional from our previous home, but find that it is too large and impossible to clean around and under it.. Although it is great to have lots of seating. I'm wondering if there is a better way to layout future in this room? Or if we should lay it out the same and get smaller furniture. This is our main living room and where we spend the most time as a family. I've attached a before photo, an after photo with our current furniture and the layout. The room is approximately. 11' wide x 13' long (not including the window nook). Thanks so much!

last yearI really like the juxtaposition of an older home with MCM furniture. I’d highlight that gorgeous blue rocker by placing it in front of the bay window like this layout. I don’t think your sectional is a good fit with your rocker, though, and would choose a style similar to the second photo. I also like the woven woods on the windows instead of drapes to showcase the beautiful trim. The little half circle on the wall next to the couch is meant to represent a sconce, and the circle behind the second chair is a floor lamp.

Comments (24)Here's a few pics of what the place looked like before we moved in. They had it set up with their tv on the wall where we have our bookcases. Also, we painted, changed the closets, refinished the floors...so it looks a lot different :). But anyway, I think you can kind of tell how tight it is with the furniture set up that way. It's doable for sure and it creates more space in the middle of the room. I recommend moving the tv to the long wall (ideally on a longer media cabinet, if budget allows) and floating the sofa between the living room and the kitchen - so the sofa back is facing the kitchen and sofa faces the tv. Then if space allows you could add a loveseat or a chair. What you don't want to do is cram too much furniture into the room. Comments (1)That sectional is too big and IMO who wants to sit all lined up on a giant sofa not coducive to conversation or TV watching look at a sofa and 2 chairs so much better for both There is lots of space for a TV so why infront of the FP or above it for that matter IMO you never buy furniture for a space you do not live in . Many things pop up in real life that a floor plan cannot deal with. Comments (9)I vote for the middle drawing except instead of two sofas back to back, put two chairs up against the windows with a table in between which creates a small conversation area. If your family is into games or puzzles maybe you could expand that seating area. I don't like the idea of a sectional that would have part of its back toward the fireplace. As for the chaise in front of the fireplace, it's worth a try if you're really excited about it. I would want to be able to return it or use it in another room if I didn't like it there. Sometimes you don't know if you're going to like something until you try it. Hard no for me always on putting the TV over the fireplace. I guess some people are fine with it, but it's not for me and you will find the majority opinion on this forum will run against it. last yearWith the furniture you have, this is probably the only possible layout. To get extra seating, could add a chair or perhaps two in the nook.
If considering new seating, a smaller scale style with legs won’t take up as much visual space and a sectional is probably your best bet, if it’s working for you right now. See below, but configured the other way.
