After looking at options for WT for my dining room, I realize that the living room has unique challenges due to the remodel. I replaced 2 slider windows, which I now regret (long story), with one window that is actually 3 windows together - narrow casement windows on both sides of a large fixed window. This room is used solely as a music room. The challenge is the hardware (crank and window lock) on the casement windows. The depth of the window is 2" and the crank takes up more than 1" of the recess. Not a problem for drapes, which would hang outside the window, but limits my options for installing shades / blinds in the window recess. The ceiling in this room is sloped, so hanging WT from the ceiling is not a good option. I would like to have 3 separate shades / blinds that operate independently. Some options: 1) wooden blinds, with a single header across, recessed in the window; stop blinds at bottom of glass - crank will show when blinds are down 2) honeycomb shades, with 3 separate headers; stop shades at bottom of glass - crank exposed when shades are down; use valence across top of window to hide separation between headers 3) honeycomb shades, but use stationary drape panels between windows to "hide" header separations - I think the side windows are too narrow for this. 4) wooden plantation shutters - extend far enough out from the window to leave space for crank and window lock. Problem is that I will be able to tilt, but not open, the shutters on the center fixed window, which will obscure the view and may reduce too much light

Hey There: We suggest that you go with blinds or shades for each window individually. A window treatment must be functional at first and looking at your pictures, the new tenant needs privacy and light management. I assume that the bottom window blinds will never be used in the first place but they will allow for light coming in and for privacy. I still stand with Jilly’s first example of cafe curtains that are placed about 3/4 of the way up the window. If they would be on rings you could very easily open them during the day and close them at night. I would want light whenever possible. Hopefully the neighbor cannot see in during the daytime.

Hi Sara D, I love your dining room--dramatic, yet refined. I also thought you shoud let the beauty of your wood floors shine through! But after seeing how the rug really did bring an element of softness into the room, balancing the dramatic wall and beams, and the HUGE window, I understand. So, there's something called a washable rug out on the market, and they are extremely low pile. Frankly, I don't thing there even IS a pile on them. I picked one up at ALDI a few months ago, and it's only a little bit thicker than a piece of rolled vinyl. Unfortunately, I can't give you the manufacturer because I put that corner of the rug under my couch, lol. If you go with the ultra-low pile washable rug, don't get a busy patterned one. You have plenty of pattern on your table--you don't want to run the risk of anything clashing. If you can find one that is cream colored in the field, and perhaps has a band of brown or charcoal--or both, that would look fabulous. Love that mirror above the buffet--it's gorgeous! But it does what a mirror is supposed to do, it reflects everything in front of it. I think you have 4 or 5 hanging lights over your table ;-) If you want to counteract that, here's two solutions...1.) put a black or very dark brown drum shade over your light. It will stop the light from being reflected on the mirror and on the window. It will also bring your design into a more cohesive style. Black metal (like wrought iron) goes so much better with any shade of wood than brass does. 2.) take the mirror down and put up a piece of artwork. If you absolutely love the frame of the mirror (I do!) maybe find a nice print of a favorite art piece, and cut it down to fit inside the frame. You can even upload a favorite photo from your camera roll, and print it to size at a local office supply store or even Walgreen's. The window is dramatic and gorgeous, it doesn't need any covering to enhance it. In fact, any patterned coverings you put up may detract from it, or clash with your decor. If you want to experiment with some sort of privacy, you can find rice paper style window film in the window coverings aisle at HD. It's not permanent, only affixed with water. If you don't like it, you've only spent $30. and a couple hours. It would eliminate the glare from the light fixture, though. Someone mentioned that you have too many chairs at the table, making it look crowded. I think it looks "crowded" because they are very close together. Maybe if you put one chair from each side in the back corners (where cute doggie is, and on the left side too) it would give you a little more "breathing room" at the table. Of course, if you have 8 people eating at the table every day, moving the chairs constantly would be a hassle. You have teenagers---you probably have a houseful of kids at times! :-) Good luck and post photos of your project! :-)
