I was thinking the same thing as snookums2. Either give us a peek of what you have or what you'd like to have (or both). You can (and will) successfully be able to blend elements from all those styles if you create a plan and stick to it. I find my natural oak floors are a tad orange-y and with the style you're leaning toward, I might go with a darkened grey stain. Similar to a color you find on baskets at Ballard Designs...not that real weathered grey, but a distinct brown with a grey tone. I think Minwax calls it "driftwood".

DH and I were simply driving around the day we bought this house. We just stopped in to look at model homes on a lark and I fell in love with the foot print. We weren't looking to buy a house at all that day. This was almost 40 years ago when floor plans were just starting to open up. The first thing I noticed was that the front of the house was a wide entry with only a living room/dining room visible. The big selling point was the family room (at the very back) was separate to the kitchen and the kitchen was just semi open to it with a wide open doorway. The other big selling point was the kitchen was in the middle of of the house. The "interesting thing" is that if I have all the blinds open I can stand at the kitchen window,look through the rear window of the living room which is lined up with on e of the windows at the front of the house. So I can stand in my interior kitchen and see down the street. During the remodel I plan to make the kitchen even more private by installing a pocket door in the small doorway off the main hall. People always use this as a shortcut to the family room even though it only and extra 7 feet of steps to pass the kitchen and turn into it. I'm a one person cook. I detest people hanging about the kitchen. So this works for me. I would probably have to be medicated if my kitchen was open to the rest of the house. You could see part of my kitchen from the front door at our first house but not the actual working part.

Hi Caroline, wow, that is a challenging space! When are you doing your "four seasons" room? I'm just wondering because it seems like the things you want and your DH has agreed to are a fairly large undertaking, in time, expense, and big furniture that might be difficult to repurpose. What will this space become when you have the new TV/company space? Also, if I may ask, what region of the country do you live in? I agree with you about not wanting the open storage. The picture you posted with those open shelves is my least favorite, although I realize you were really looking at the bottom cabinets. The wood against that green wall in that picture is unattractive, in my personal opinion. Also, it's really, really hard to pull off open shelving or even open bookshelves unless you're super organized and have some very nice things to display; otherwise it just looks messy and cluttered. The white unit is by far my favorite, because it looks the least "heavy." I know your DH wants hickory, but, and this is just my personal opinion, a long room like that with wood floors and then a massive wood wall structure just looks very unbalanced to me. The hugeness of the entertainment center and TV just completely dominate the room. The white one lightens up the whole room and just automatically looks cleaner and not like a mess. I would hope that you're not planning to completely fill every inch of shelf space; if you can balance the space on either side of the TV, that would be nice. My understanding is that you want the bottom cabinets to hold over-sized photo albums and photography equipment? That seems like a great idea! I think the whole concept is solid. I would just urge you to think about lighter colors, and using white areas, i.e. not filling all the space, giving it a light, airy look to counter balance the room both spatially and color wise and not make one end "wood heavy." Also, think about what you want that room to be when it's no longer the TV lounge. Maybe a kind of library/quiet space/conversation room? Perhaps where the TV was you could do a small gallery wall-or one big work of art, with a few smaller framed pieces on the shelves, breaking up the space between the stacks. Just some thoughts.

LV, I bet you didn't plan on getting an education in architectural styles when you asked your question did you :) Anyway, in response to your question. It sounds like you have a specific style that you like and I do not think the stone around the door is going to achieve the look you are going for. I think I would stick with the other option that you listed at the end of your post: I'm also considering dropping the stone here to shorter wainscot height (same as garage and elsewhere), and doing siding above that and around the door, so that the white craftsman door trim would be siding instead of stone. I think you'll end up with a far better look. In the end it really comes down to what you like. We are building as well and if you are like us you've been pinning ideas for at least a couple of years. As new options come up I am having to ask myself "will this change the look of our house in such a way that it no longer has the aspects that drew us to it to begin with" I hope I've been some help.
