I've done it successfully and what has worked best is not to rush getting the plant into soil.

I lost two this spring by transplanting into black plastic pots of the right size, but direct sunlight overheated the black pots and killed the roots.

Let the roots get long, change the water, you don't want it to get anoxic, and be very, very patient. (Forgetfullness helps)

Actually... this is the way I do my rooting... almost everything I have tried the way others do rots for me before it ever roots... I now have had 5 to root through water YEAH!!!! So I take my cutting and put it in a water bottle (like zerherhills) and I put it under grow lights. After a couple of weeks I notice that they start to callus. So I then get my potting soil and make it damp and place the soil in a 4" pot. I then take a pencil and make a hole in the soil and move my cutting with the callus into hole in the soil. I put a little water in the bottom of a baggie, but so it hangs off the shelf so the little pot isn't sitting in water, but there is plenty of moisture in the bag. I then put the rose in the baggie and place it back under the lights. After a couple of days I open the bag for about 10 minutes, then I exhale into the bag and tie it shut again and put it back under the lights.... I repeat this process until I get new growth then I open the baggie, but leave it in the bag still keeping it under the lights. When the plant has enough grown to go out of the top of the bag I then take off completely.

Sharon, thanks for sharing your process. I'm far too lazy and short on space to deal with grow lights, unfortunately. I have a pretty good success rate rooting cuttings in planting mix, but I haven't ever worked with a water-rooted rose cutting.

StillAnn, thanks for the advice. Glad you told me, as I was thinking I should move them into planting mix quickly. They have just a few very short roots, so I'll leave them until there are lots more. Should I have, then, a bundle of long roots before I move them into a mix? And when I do that -- should I use a cloche, as I normally do? (I do the plastic soda bottle setup.)

I'll wait as long as needed -- forgetfulness (and laziness) come pretty easy to me!

Here is my latest rose that I rooted in water. I still have him under lights. He is an un-named rose but he really has a GREAT strong scent. My whole bedroom smells like I must have a dozen roses in there.
