Here's another update of our home here in San Diego County. As mentioned we are in a very, very hot inland area. We've an added privacy challenge in our backyard having one side on a street where cars and trucks go past, the backside close to neighbors and the third side facing an empty hill above us that is planned for a large two-story home overlooking our entire backyard and another neighbor higher up than us overlooking our entire backyard as well, but who also has a basketball court where parties are held. I planted low water hedges a few years back when we had the pool redone. We've been living with dirt back here for a number of years now; this current arid-scape was done over this past two months, i.e., stone patio, small retaining wall, decomposed granite with a higher ratio of gravel, 4 palo verde trees, ceanothus yankee point, iceberg roses and yellow lantana. I've got an umbrella and some chairs that I plan to put here for an outdoor lounging area. The yard had, among other things, two very large coral trees that were terrible water consumers, lawn, old fruit trees (apple, peach and pear), giant birds of paradise and lots of jungle palms, to mention a few. We took everything out except the queen palms (I probably should have removed them too) but had to have some drainage improvements and protective barriers installed because of root issues. Here are before and after shots (the before shots were about 9 years ago after we had removed many of the plants and about 3 months after I had the coral trees lowered and laced!) ...

We lived in the highlands of Arizona for 3 years and had a small lawn planted over Netafim. Sounds like a good idea...until the Netafim fails and you have brown patches in your grass! What's the alternative other than to dig up your lawn? Bummer to say the least! We just used a sprinkler to keep the lawn going.
