Question for tenants
Comments (22)Another tenant's perspective: How often does your landlord raise the rent (if ever): In the current apt it went from $800 - $900 after we were here a couple of years (it's been just over 4 now). We have both been tenants of his together and separately for a good 9 - 11 years, have always been tenants at will and have always paid our rent on time. We're the first floor tenants of a triple decker and the second floor neighbor is not only loud but keeps her dog in a cage 23.5/7 and is gone for days at a time so there's howling and scratching which is heartbreaking and distressing. Do you feel these increases are fair? Why or why not? As long as he eventually deals with the noise/neglect issue it seems fair enough. But if he raises it another 100 I don't think it would be fair. Raises I receive do little to cover cost of living increases. I also know that he owns outright several houses in the area. No mortgages, just prop. taxes (which are some of the lowest in MA) etc. I know it's not the average situation but it's the one he's in. It would be fair for him to raise rent to keep it in line with the area but I think the idea of a little bit more frequently is less painful psychologically than a lump sum. Thanks for the input. Your're welcome. Thanks for being a landlord who appreciates a good tenant and can keep one more place affordable for those of us who aren't homeowners!...See MoreQuestion for Tenants
Comments (34)I have been living peacefully in a sometimes loud community in portland, or. Let me explain a little. I have a townhome, and in the back of me is a 2 bdrm flat, and on the left side of me is another townhome with 3 bdrms, and on the other side of them is a townhome like mine. So i am in the end unit. Well the neighbors in the 3bdrm townhome have started smoking pot, the skunky kind which has the most God awful smell in the universe. I know it well because my ex-boyfriend smoked it in our backyard in california. Now Oregon has a no smoking policy which is strictly enforced. Rather it be cigarettes, cigars, pot, etc.. I have complained to my landlord about the smell and that its them who are smoking it, I know it because I have seen him boldly with his terrible rolled up joint in his mouth. Since my complaint they went two days with out smoking it, now they are back to smoking it again, I have decided to move out because my infant can not be exposed to that smell. She was born with some lung problems (not going into detail about it) But, I have also contacted the police regarding the fact that he is so bold about it. The police have taken matters into their own hands and well now they are pissed off but, hey I will do anything to protect my child! They also have two small kids and I don't understand why they are smoking that around them. But, hey to each their own. The fact of the matter is when your landlord doesn't do enough about the issue they lose tenants, and then things can get nasty when the Police get involved. So be kind and keep in mind that in a shared community others matter! So abid by the rules and regulations and everyone will be happy. TENANTS HAVE RIGHTS! Even against smokers Atleast in Oregon they do. Peace!...See MoreUpgrading to a bigger house after the kids move out
Comments (55)This is an old thread but a goodie. coxfamily, I think you'll be very happy with your choice. When the last kid moved out of my parent's house back in the early 80's, my parents sold their 2400 square foot house, and bought a 3300 square foot house on 2 acres. Then they renovated and added a master suite that added an additional 800 square feet of space. My parents spent almost 30 very happy years in that house (it was a one story), hosting lots of get togethers and Sunday night dinners with all the kids and grandkids. Holidays too. My mother loved having land and not seeing her neighbors right in front of her. My DH and I just sold our 3 BR/ 2 BATH 1901 square feet condo and are building a 2870 square feet house. The majority of the space is on the main floor, but my studio and the guest bedroom/exercise room are upstairs. I'm already in my early 60's and just in case, we're building the house with an elevator. However being slightly claustrophobic, I have no intention of using that elevator to get to my studio, unless absolutely necessary. Why are we going bigger? Well DH wanted a room of his own and we wanted a larger entertaining space that is more indoor/outdoor space. And when kids come to visit, there's enough room to spread out without being on top of one another but not so much space that its unwieldy. We don't need lots of bedrooms or even large bedrooms, but we wanted more public space. Technically we have two bedrooms, the master and the guest bedroom, but my large studio will be a third bedroom when needed and if it's ever really needed DH's study can be a fourth bedroom....See MoreDo you move out before closing if you are moving locally?
Comments (18)State of Connecticut. The answer is yes. We moved out before the closing on our former homes. All were local moves. Very simply, when the closing was done, we turned over the keys and no longer had any rights to the property. Staying the house would have been negotiated with the new owners prior to the closing and spelled out in a contract. By the same token, when we closed on homes we were buying, our walk throughs the morning of the closing were in empty houses. As far as moving our furniture, our first house we moved into ourselves from an apartment. Our second house, we moved in right after the closing. We lived in a camper for a night after moving out of our first house. The furniture was kept locked in the mover's truck overnight. The last move, we closed on our new house 2 weeks before we moved out of the old one. Enjoy the journey. eal51 in western CT...See MoreSteve Tom
