they babysitting grandkids, extremely disruptive children, can I
Comments (4)I would steer clear of the resident issue and the babysitting issue. If they investigate the noise issue, and you tell them which apartment the kids belong to, they will figure out that the kids don't live there. But bringing up those issues, if the management doesn't like complaints, won't do you any favors with management. Stick to the noise issue. Yes, it is during the day time. But if it is very loud and very often, that means that other tenants are being disturbed. And that isn't fair. Don't just say the kids are noisy. Be specific as to how their noise affects you. You can't hear your radio or TV, they wake you up from a nap, their yelling startles you or frightens you. And don't forget to mention the rock and stick throwing--that could get someone hurt. It might also be good to say what you would like to happen. Explain that you understand that kids play outside and make noise. But you want that noise moved to directly outside *their* apartment, not yours. Or to one of the playgrounds. You aren't asking that the kids stay indoors all day, or never make a sound. You are asking that their noise be moved away from your apartment, or that the noise level be lowered. If you show the manager you have reasonable expectations, they may be more willing to work with you....See MoreHelp settle a plumbing debate between tenant and landlord
Comments (11)I agree with the others, but for different reasons. Bottom line is that it's your fault from misuse. And you will have more clogs from Q-tips as you keep it up, as evidenced by last clog. There are likely more Q-tips stuck inside the toilet base that will cause another clog sooner or later. Even so, the stuck flapper did make the problem worse, since water wasn't going down the drain. It allowed it to overflow (It's like a kid flushing a clogged toilet the second time - that's where it ends up on the floor. But it's still secondary to the clog. Bottom line, even if the flapper failure DID help the water to go over the edge, it was bound to happen one day by the regular misuse. BTW, I wonder just how timely you were in addressing the stuck flapper issue - did it run for days and weeks before you got around to getting it fixed? I have customers that have done that and have gotten huge water bills as a result. And if they were to keep it up, the day they have a clog, flush, and leave the room, watch out below!...See MoreBat in rented house - what should tenant expect
Comments (91)Another piece of advice to pass on to your daughter- At this stage in her life she really might be better off in an apartment building that either has a building manager to handle things. When one lives in an individual unit owned by a landlord the way your daughter did, it’s catch as catch can whether or not the landlord is responsive, and how is a prospective tenant to know? It’s not as if the landlord will give references. When it comes time for repairs, will the owner promise to be there with the workman every minute, or will your daughter have to take off work every time to protect her belongings? Or worse, in an effort to save money will the owner try to fix the problem himself and not be able to, and then have to bring in a workman anyway, so now your daughter will have taken off 2 days of work!! In an apartment building, the manager would be there to supervise workman. I have been through all this myself. A cute little house with a yard sounds nice, but the reality is far less bucolic. A small efficiency apartment in a well- maintained building with a live- in manager and a management company in addition so that the landlord doesn’t need to be contacted for every repair is the best option for a busy young professional at the beginning of her career. And she’ll meet some other young professionals in an apartment building and that is good for her, to have someone right there. Sure you can have friends at work, but nothing beats a neighbor! People nowadays want gorgeous furnishings right out of the gate, but it’s just fine to have bookshelves made out of wooden boards and cinder blocks and a desk made out of a door on saw horses. To live in a clean, functioning, efficient, safe, stress-free place is priceless!!...See MoreQuestion on wall condition after tenants moved out
Comments (28)Thank y'all. I am treating this as a learning lesson. We had an episode before with the tenants when a misunderstanding had turned into them screaming (like banshee and I have never in my life knew how someone could scream and yell a that capacity) to us. My wife still remembers the incidents and does not wants to deal with them. At this point we just want this out of our lives. I am deducting material costs (total less than $50) from the deposit since. We will be repainting the house and replacing the carpet with LVP. One question I have is, shall I just email them and let them know the reason for taking the $50 out of the deposit, with cost of each materials we had to purchase? Or just return the deposit with the money taken out?...See MoreGammyT
