Removing paint from old window screens
Comments (4)Hmmm, perhaps your screens are bronze that has aged to that beautiful dark blackish-green color of old bronze? If the screens are in fine condition why would you replace them, unless they are clogged with paint? If they are truly clogged I would just replace the screening, which is not hard to do, but does take some practice to get them really tight. Bronze screening is expensive (but worth it in my opinion because it gets to be such a nice dark color), but if you invested in a roll, that would lower the price some. You can find it on-line by googling, I'm sure. Have you tried just scrubbing the screens with a stiffish brush? It's remarkable how much gunk accumluates over time. Vaccuum first, then scrub briskly with lots of water. HTH MOlly...See Moreunevenness on the exterior wood beams - how to repair?
Comments (3)Normally, only cracks and holes would be filled during prep. The examples you show can be improved by sanding and spackling, but it would be very time consuming and there would still be imperfections....See MoreRepair, Don't Replace, Old Wood Windows
Comments (154)Mary, Are you referring to window restoration or just sealing up some existing windows? The two are going to be very different type professionals. If it it just sealing up some exterior trim on windows, a decent painter can do that. If its window restoration, that is a different ball of wax. Window restoration is a very niché marketplace. The best thing to do is start with a Google area search near your home and especially in those areas that are more heavily concentrated in older homes. Next would be to ask around any of the historic districts that are in your area and see who they might have a list for. Hope this helps....See MoreRepairing wood rot on a window
Comments (7)Thanks for your encouragement, Ripped! I popped the window out of the frame and went to work. I used the far end of the frame to create a pattern, which I cut from a plastic putty knife. Diluted the WoodEpox with a teaspoon or so of Liquid Wood solution to make it less thick, then went to work with my putty knife. Cured the patch overnight by putting the frame next to a space heater. Sanding was really easy--I was able to 120-grit sandpaper. Popped the window back into the frame to make sure it would slide back and forth. The results are less than perfect, but pretty decent. Tomorrow night, it's supposed to get down to 26 degrees, so I don't have time to refine my work, cure it and paint it in the next 24 hours or so. So I'm painting it and leaving it as it is for now. If I get ambitious in the spring and still own the house, I might go back and tweak my work. I don't know if I would have tried all this without your support. Thanks again!...See Moretoddinmn
