Moving laundry upstairs to a spare bedroom
We’ll be moving our laundry upstairs to a spare bedroom and need ideas on how to use the space. It would be a huge laundry room if I don’t divide the room somehow. If I do create separate spaces, what can I do with a space that would then be too small for a bedroom?

Comments (13)Maybe the OP can decide what size machines suit his/ her laundry room ;-) One of those Whirlpool machines costs more than the Miele, and both cost more than the Miele which comes to the market next month. I’m not advocating any particular brand, but the other significant advantage for the Miele in an older house is that it does not require a 220v receptacle, which every other electric dryer will. That’s another savings. An old house with stone walls and a slate roof is not without its challenges when it comes to adding amenities. Comments (25)Having just sold our home and now beginning to build our next one, we have learned the following from our real estate agent and our home designer. 1) 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms on the second level are ideal for families seeking a two-story home. Each bathroom does not require a tub. As long as one upstairs washroom has a tub, you can remove it from the other washrooms. Could this be a possibility to save you some space? 2) Laundry on the upstairs is ideal as that is where the vast majority of your laundry will come from. Having said that, I have 2nd-floor laundry in my current home and I constantly bringing my baskets down to the main level to fold it while I watch TV. The easier solution would be for me to add a TV to my room but I am too cheap to pay for another cable box ;) 3) For your laundry room, be sure to add a sink and ensure you have cupboards for storage and space for hanging & folding. Comments (12)I have lived in both recently. One advantage of a downstairs master is sound control. I know it sounds strange and is certainly design dependent, but sounds travels vertically a bit easier. One specific thing I do is build so that there are 2 doorways from master bedroom to rest of house so that helps on the horizontal sound transmission. No way to do that between floors. If the master bedroom is above the kitchen or living room, sound will travel. Even if not - the "diagonal" sound transmission is harder to stop also. One unforeseen downside of 1st floor master is comfort level about windows being left open at night. It was really unremembered because we had it 15 years ago and it was an issue. And then we moved more urban and built 1st floor master. Speaking of commutes, a big commute can be an issue for coffee drinkers.... (Typing 10 feet away from my Miele which is another 15 ft from Master bed - it is almost perfectly centered). Comments (5)It’s funny because when I my best friend visited with my god children a few years ago he put the small one to bed in the basement because he said if she wakes up and hears us she will not go back to bed and it will be a long night so she does better far away from us. So certainly needs vary even with kiddos. I know digging is definately an expense. Therein lies the problem…the ceiling is only about 74 inches. It’s certainly fine for sub 6 foot folks… the egress window will probably help the overall feel of the room A lot but the room won’t be very big.… just big enough for a queen and small dresser. I could see it being claustrophobic for more than an occasional use guest but I have seen kids rooms of similar size. If we do it will likely put a day bed. if I was a teenager I would 100% take a small basement room with en-suite over a larger bedroom upstairs. In my case this room would likely be where mom stays since it would be near the media room and she likes her privacy....See More

4 years agoI created a design for a similar layout, and putting washer & dryer in closet requires much plumbing and exhausting. The price doubled before it was completed, because the contractor didn't factor in all of that. It turned out beautiful. I don't know exactly how your layout compares. Your photo floor plan doesn't have dimensions, and it's a mirror image on line, so all the words are backward. If you can give me dimensions, I'll be happy to help you out. The room in my client's home was one open space that I turned into a bedroom and media room. It was adjacent to the bathroom. The bathroom closet was not used, and we just flipped it to open on the media room side with custom made shutter doors. Here are a couple of layouts, closet, shutter doors & initial rendering of whole room.
This is the dimensioning of the washer/dryer cabinet.
Rendering of the entire area. 2 doors you see; one is into the bedroom and the front one into the bath. To the left side of the bathroom door is the washer/dryer closet (it's hidden behind the entry wall.
This is final construction of the W/D cabinet. One side the stacked W/D, left side door has shelving inside.
Right hand side door slides into the cabinet case. Left side does the same.
