Can you grow citrus from cuttings?
Comments (3)Grafting isn't going to happen, that's why I didn't ask about it. I don't have access to root stock. You can't buy it in nurseries. Trifoliate is used here, but isn't available to someone like me who has a couple of plants that I'd want grafted. Then, I would have to find someone who could do it, and would have to pay them. Cheaper to go to the local nursery and buy a grapefruit or satsuma, frankly. I took a grafting class once, and nothing that I grafted took, so I wouldn't do it myself even if I had access to trifoliate. A lot of people grow citrus from seed here, and they grow great in the ground. The neighbor I want to do this for has one grown from seed, but it's about 20' tall and has a lot of thorns and has never even bloomed, so growing from seed doesn't guarantee anything. It isn't trifoliate, I think it's supposed to be a grapefruit. The leaves are large and taste mild. It doesn't get cold enough to kill citrus. In fact, they get quite tall, without that dwarfing effect from grafting. I've seen 25' tall citrus here, grown on their own roots, and loaded with fruit....See MoreDo I have to cut back citrus tree roots in pots for this ? Please

Comments (4)Wait until your Spring, when both your tree and the rootstock are actively growing. Ask your local nurseryman for a good rootstock for your area; get 10; then do 10 T-buds or chip buds; and if you do them carefully, you should get at least 2 or 3 to take. When they are strong and growing well, I would take out the old tree or leave it and put the new tree(s) in another place. You can prune the old tree quite heavily, if you want to save it; as long as the trunk is solid and healthy; it will grow new shoots. BTW, one of the reasons the oranges from the old tree taste so good is the age of the tree; the new grafted trees should produce fruit in a year or two and they will be "clones" of the existing tree. Be warned, though... fruits from the new trees may not taste as good for a few years....See MoreCitrus tree cutting grew leaves but dropped them before growing roots
Comments (7)I was looking at the limequat cutting I took 10 days ago. I was about to give up on it because it turned 60% brown. I went to cut the brown part to the next closest green bud... I ended up pulling the cutting out of the cup to cut it better and it has 1 nice hair and a few smaller hairs. Keep in mind the biggest "hair" is 1cm and the smaller "hair" are a few millimeter in length. This "hair" I'm referring to are the roots.... which I am shocked to have after 10days... I don't understand why the cutting started to die back... I have two options.... Do you guys think it's better to just keep the 1 node above dirt or should I re-position to have another node above the dirt? When I planted the cutting, I put the bottom 2 nodes(hairs coming out and calloused) and than 2 more nodes about 2inches above the bottom nodes but it has no roots... under the dirt and above the dirt it has 1 node left because I cut the brown part back....See Moreuncle molewacker z9b Danville CA (E.SF Bay)
