Trellis talk, and my gratitude
Comments (6)Hi Bryan, First, I just want to say welcome to our happy little horticultural family here at the Oklahoma Forum. Wasn't it a relief to find all of us here and realize you weren't the only crazy garden maniac in OK? I'm so glad you had a great garden year last year, and hope this year is even better. The right time to plant peas is from Feb. 15th through March 10th, so you are aiming for the right time frame. The problem might be that this year is colder-than-average and wetter-than-average. In a year like this year, you might want to go even a week or two later OR be prepared to cover up your peas if the temps dip below about 25 degrees. Peas are pretty cold-hardy, but even they can only take so much cold and they can be damaged or killed at temps about 25 degrees or below. Now, here's where planting peas get tricky. If your soil is about 50 degrees, the peas will sprout in 7-10 days. However, our soil isn't that warm yet and that means you have a couple of better options that would increase you chances of having great pea germination. Here they are: 1) Pre-sprout your peas inside. I sometimes do this by soaking the peas in lukewarm water for an hour or so and then wrapping the wet peas up inside a damp paper towel or coffee filter and placing that inside a zip-lock bag labeled with the pea variety. I check them daily, and remove them and plant them as soon as they sprout. 2) Start them indoors in flats, paper cups or peat pellets in a sunny window or under lights. You really only want to plant them, let them sprout and then move them outside within a very few days so they don't get too leggy, or too used to the warm temperatures. Harden them off in a shady, cool area for a few days...using proper hardening off procedures to ensure they don't die of too much sunlight/wind, and then plant them into the ground. 3) Wait a few more days and check your soil temps. You can check your county's soil temps on the OK Mesonet (let me know if you need to know how to access/use the Mesonet) or you can measure your soils temp using an inexpensive meat thermometer with a metal probe. Don't sow your seed until the soil at planting depth has been at 50 degrees for at least three consecutive days. One reason peas are iffy here is that they can take a really long time to germinate in cold, wet soil and that can cause the pea seed to rot before it germinates. Sometimes the peas take so long to germinate that they don't start blooming and setting peas until the weather is hot enough to start burning up the plants and/or killing them. You can grow peas and then sucession plant with green beans and it generally works out just fine. If you are going to start you beans in containers and transplant them into the ground, be sure to use something plantable like peat pots, peat pellets or paper Dixie cups with the bottoms cut out of them. This reduces the likelihood of transplant shock when you plant them and you can plant them cup and all, and just put the plants/Dixie cups on the compost pile in the fall). Beans sprout really fast, so I'd only start them a couple of weeks before my expected planting date. If you start them too early, the plants will get too big and their growth may stall if they become rootbound in their containers. You also can direct seed pole beans in May for a late-summer bean harvest. With both peas and beans, avoid overfeeding them with a high-nitrogen fertilizer or it will turn them into big lush monsters that do not produce a lot of peas or beans, and the aphids are extra-eager to eat plants that are overfed nitrogen. Good luck, Dawn...See MoreGRATITUDE Friday, January 18
Comments (7)Today's a slow day so I'm cleaning out my folders and finishing my annual expense sheet and gathering end of year financial papers together. I have to be grateful for my librarian skills -LOL- I'm not artistic, can't sing, have terrible penmanship, I have a poor sense of fashion (although I wouldn't combine patterns) and I haven't mastered my digital camera either. But I am organized!! And my paperwork is aready to go. All I need now are those official statements from corporations (W-2, 1099 etc.). And now my file folders are ready for 2008. Personally I'd rather be artistic. I envy those who can sing or paint or play musical instruments. Have a wonderful weekend everyone....See MoreGratitude....
Comments (28)Well someone has to make some trouble here and it looks like it's up to me! :D Nah, Scratched off the other stuff. I have to say if *anyone* in this world deserves a cup pot of coffee prepared for her it's my buddy Dotmom! And I think a fresh hot roll or at least some toast should be on a plate with it too, but hey, I'm not getting in the middle of this! Too bad we don't live closer. I'd love to make some coffee for you! :) But you might have to settle for a styrofoam cup! Everyone has their quirks. I have mine. Sometimes you do things for someone and don't feel appreciated. Even I've felt that way a time or two so you're not alone sweetie. Get a good night's sleep, scratch Buster under the chin a few minutes (methinks *he* will thank you for it!), then enjoy the day tomorrow and hopefully things are brighter for you quickly. You ARE appreciated here, at least by me!...See MoreGratitude this week
Comments (21)This morning I received a text from a dear friend who I don't often get a chance to see. But she was thinking of me and sent me a sweet text. It made my day, and I paid it forward and reached out to another friend. Much of technology has been questionable in terms of human connection, but I find texting has encouraged so much more communication that would not have otherwise taken place in the moments of my days. So, grateful for my friend and for texting....See Moreyeonassky
