GRATITUDE Thurs., January 24

I can't believe this month is 3/4 (or so) GONE! Spring is just around the corner...or so I hope. It is frigid here this morning!

I'm so grateful that it's finally Thursday. It's our church night, which means I'll quit working on this week's project mid-afternoon so that I can get everything (including myself!) ready to go. I handle the church finances, so I have to write checks, balance the checkbook, and get a few other things prepared before we leave home. I've worked some long days this week, so YIPPEE - it's finally church night and I get to quit early today! :-)

I'm grateful that my income stream got a small shot in the arm yesterday when a second newspaper asked me to freelance for them. AND I finished the first draft of a writing project that was important to me. Took me long enough, but we won't go into that.....

Yesterday after visiting sister Annie at the Home, I stopped at the grocery store to pick up some milk. I ran into the gal they hired to take my place when I retired. She looked exhausted.....this is one the busier times on that job. I told her she just gave me my 'gratitude of the day'.....I no longer have to spend my Januarys working myself to a frazzle. Plus I'm not out in the cold at 6:30 in the morning, unfreezing/scraping/etc just to be able to get my car on the road. I came home with a big old smile on my face!!

Yesterday was my father's 83rd bday. One year ago on his bday, our ice storm hit and by this time of the day, hundreds of limbs were down,(One through the thin tin of our mobile into the living room), the electricity was out and a huge limb bigger than my waist fell into the field where we had parked the cars, just brushing the rear bumper of our son's van. This year it can't possibly be as bad for us as we had a metal roof built over the trailer and a carport built, and there just aren't that many limbs left to fall. We also bought a generator and a couple battery operated lanterns to go with the candles and oil lamp. We survived 9 days in our home because we have a wood stove and propane cookstove, but no electricity because the small generator that we borrowed was only big enough to keep the freezers cold, although DH did disconnect the freezers each evening long enough to pump hot water into the house for showers. I've prepared though. Filled several gallon jugs full of drinking water and brought in 2 five gallon buckets of rainwater to flush toilets if need be. Done laundry, charged cell phone, filled woodboxes. Now need to take a shower and I'll be prepared. Right now here in extreme eastern Ok, it is either 27, 30 or 33 depending on which of the outdoor thermometers is right. There is a thin coating of ice on the porch railing and 3" icicles hanging from the roof, although the sidewalk is still just wet. So far we have only had light rain and right now it has stopped. I pray it stays stopped until DH gets home this evening. George, we also cook on our woodstove a lot in the winter, soups, stews and beans mostly. Thanks for the idea of making bread. I ground the last of my wheat yesterday and will make 18 hr no-knead bread for tomorrow. The recipe is simplicity itself. 4 cups flour (I use a mix of whole wheat, 7 grain, and unbleached white) 1 & 1/2 cups warm water 2 tsp salt 1/3 tsp yeast Mix everything briskly in a glass or crockery bowl, cover with a towel and set on the counter overnight. The next morning beat it down and let it rise again--twice. Then oil your hands good and form it into a loaf and allow to rise for the final time. Cook at 375 til done. Great stuff. Develops a bit of a sourdough taste. The 18 hours is an estimate. How soon it will be ready will depend on the room temp. Everybody stay safe.

Hi All, I guess I missed all the July weirdness. I'm glad it didn't last too long. I'm for once getting behind on my box! I have stuff, but it is not yet enough, and I am so tired from work! And now the morons scheduled me to work 7 days in a row! I have next Wed. and Thurs. off, so I hope to have it out then. Michelle, Thunder happens during cold storms. The freak snow thing in Oct. here was weird that night because the power went out and all you couls hear was sirens, tree limbs breaking, and thunder. I do hope the coming weather is not as bad as they are making out to be. Maryanne, Lol! I have trouble putting away the crack pipe. I'm so sorry to hear that your neighbor is not just an idiot, but is a real creep!! I'm not sure how I would handle living next to someone like that. I'm glad you like the tomato seeds. I tried to make it as varied an assortment as I could. If anyone else needs tomato seeds, I still have lots of many kinds just let me know what you want in a tomato! No trade neccessary.(Jeanne you can probably guess I'm sending you some: ) ) Julie, Poo Poo Gaslight, lol! In my head I hear that stripping "Boom chicka boom". Change to "Boom caca boom!" Lol, the weird places mind goes. Did you see the post where I wrote that I had received a letter from Jeanette? She did seem ok. T2, "Cuz they fall for the beer-trick, too." Lol! It hit me several yrs ago that the first day of winter is also the shortest day of the yr; hence, each day from then on had a minute or two more of daylight. That fact helps me make it through the winter. An additional 2 minutes a day adds up to an hour a day in a month. Shirley

Im grateful my 16 y o GD is having her 4th and final knee surgery Friday. The first surgeon used screws that were too LONG and the tip has punched her muscle. All this time. At first her parents thought she was just a hypochondriac (runs in the family). But once the second surgeon saw it, he about had a fit. So, this is to repair the first surgery. Had the other one done Thanksgiving. What a way to spend the holidays, but she's my girl and she's going to be fine.

So glad that I have most of what I need to do for tomorrow night, done. Having a lot of company for dinner here. I'm all decorated for Mardi Gras and having gumbo, a wonderful, madarin almond salad and garlic bread and a great camamel creme filled king cake for dessert. :-)

I have been sick since Friday and the way my friends have rallied around me has been so heart warming; not surprising, but heart warming. I just adore them all.

that i don't have to go back to the oncologist for another 6 months and he wrote a 'script for bladder infecton, lol...yea! and i was home by 10pm last night...(from a 3:20 appt..he's that busy...)

I am so grateful that my husband has always stressed saving money first, second and third and fun after that. My girlfriend and her husband have found themselves unprepared for retirement and it's made me so sad and worried for them. We keep telling our children how important it is to put money away and to start saving when you are young.

Ya'll don't know how much I enjoy this thread... it is such a "feel good" part of my day! And don't we all need more "feel good" in our lives?! :-)
