what causes cloudy and shiny spots in hardwood floor?
Comments (0)We have hardwood floors with a Swedish matte finish. While cleaning the floor today I noticed a couple problems. In one instance, it looked like someone had left a damp towel on the floor and that area now looks cloudy. In another area there are some shiny spots near our front door and shoe rack that I thought, at first, were wet spots. When I went to dry the area, I realized that the floor was dry and that something had caused the finish there to go from matte to very shiny. The spots are about the size of someone's heel--as if something had been stepped in and walked into the house. We are a shoeless house, so it's possible it is from someone's sock. But the question is, what could it be that would ruin the floor finish like that? What happens to hardwood floor if a small puddle of water does not get dried right away? (Not necessarily to the seams, but to the actual boards) What happens to a hardwood floor finish if dog urine does not get cleaned up right away? (We also have a new puppy so anything is possible.) Is there anyway to get rid of the shiny spots or cloudy spots or to make them less noticeable? Thanks very much for your advice. btw, we have the same flooring in our kitchen. And despite the many drips, etc., that do not get cleaned up right away in there, that floor does not have any of these problems, so I am completely stumped as to what could be causing it near the front door....See MoreRepairing hardwood floors -- need help with low VOC option
Comments (2)Matching a stain color means a lot of testing. The same color in a different batch on a different wood can be different. What kind of finish was applied. An oil based finish creates an amber color, where water based finishes do not---making a huge difference. If trying to match an oil based finish color with a water based finish, you will need a toner added to the finish. Hopefully, you will have several scrap pieces on which to experiment. Both with stains, toners, and finishes....See MoreBrand New Hardwood Floor Turned Yellow in Spots after Cleaning
Comments (24)Well I will tell you, the yellow will turn to orange and the 'white' will turn to a dark yellow. Do you like that idea? No? Then stop them right now and have the fresh coat of poly removed. Start again with a sealant and a water based finish. If you do NOT like yellow then you will NOT like the orange they turn. It is NOT the wood. It is the finish. Oil poly will turn white-board orange...no need to add a stain. It does by oxidizing and exposure to UV (aka. "light"). The only thing that stops the 'ambering' is to work with something OTHER than oil poly. Do you have photos? Did you know that white oak has tannin pull? The yellow tannins (colour) in the wood can migrate from the MIDDLE of the plank to the SURFACE of the plank? This can happen with either oil or water based but it is MOST noticeable with water based. The only thing I can say is: Yellow = normal. Orange (soon to come) = normal. Strong colour variations between planks = normal. Do not pull the planks unless you can be given 100% assurance it won't happen again (hint: no one will give it to you). You ONLY pull planks if the issue is with the finish application (ie. the person allowed puddles in the finish)....See MoreShellac over hardwood floor? LVP over hardwood?
Comments (0)I am thinking about using a shellac finish and sealer on this hardwood, which will be the floor for a kid's room. This Bullseye traditional finish and sealer product from Zinsser seems widely used and well liked: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Zinsser-Bulls-Eye-Clear-Shellac-Actual-Net-Contents-32-fl-oz/3449840 This particular product says it is clear, and I think there is an amber tinted version. Can shellac be applied without problems to hardwood? I believe I could put poly on top of the shellac and be done. Is this right? Any tips or warnings? There is also this Sealcoat by Zinsser, which does not appear to be shellac based. https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-Zinsser-854-Sealcoat-Universal/dp/B000C02BXW/ref=sr_1_3_mod_primary_new?dchild=1&keywords=zinsser+shellac+sealer&qid=1610393849&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sr=8-3 Would the Sealcoat be a better option to just put over the hardwood? I have read elsewhere that shellac can be applied over poly, which is good since I don't know what is on the existing floor. Other places say shellac could be sanded after application, so when we have a chance to completely sand and refinish this floor, I would probably want to do this. Does this sound like an acceptable temporary fix, or is there something I should consider before proceeding? Would shellac ruin or damage the hardwood. I am also thinking about LVP, but I am concerned this hardwood floor is not flat enough for that. I understand the subfloor for LVP must be 3/16" within about a 1 foot diameter to work. Any ideas about this? Is there a way eyeball this floor to determine whether click LVP could be put down? Thanks!...See Morejsfreud
