What's best to clean Kitty Litter on Hardwood floors?
Comments (14)I literally tried to do so many of these solutions that I could find all over the internet and none of them worked for me at least. My cat used to be the type that would kick her litter out of the box and then pee on it and that's why it was on my floor in the first place. I ended up just buying a thin hard bristled scrub brush and Pledge Gentle Wood Floor Cleaner from Walmart and I got down and scrubbed it out of the grains of my wood floor. It got it all out though! This may mess with the longevity of the floor but honestly I am in an apartment and I just need the stain to be gone. I guess if you need to you can get wood refinishing polish but I don't even think the apartments here got finished in the first place. Lmao. I hope this can help someone!...See MoreBest vac for cleaning hardwood floors & around cabinets?
Comments (61)Thank you Flash407 for bumping this thread back to page 1. Now I've got it bookmarked. One of those things I meant to read but didn't get around to. What a lot of good info. This is better than epinions! :) Have to say I too am sorry about spending $400 on a Dyson, (EVERY time I use it!) for a number of reasons. Strong suction but it ends there. However, mine is not a 'ball', so maybe that one is different. Considered the Roomba, and from what you're all saying it really does sound great, still not sure about the cat reaction though??? The other name coming up again and again seems to be *Miele*. Particularly for the canister vacs for hardwood and kitchens? (The backpack sounds cool but unfortunately my 'back' is beyond that :) Have to go check these Mieles out. Anything has to be better than lugging that Dyson around OR trying to use it's attachments. Speaking of smells...you're all lucky not to live in eastern PA. A new invasive species arrived in a cargo container in 2000, according to Rutgers Univ. in Allentown PA, called the Brown marmorated Stink Bug. They got to my area (just north of Philadelphia) a couple years ago and it's a war zone! Vacumm one of these things and the smell (an oil they can spray) will be everywhere plus in the vacuum itself for days. :(...See MoreHow do you clean your kitchen hardwood floors
Comments (30)I've just gone back through this thread quickly and one thing that I haven't seen is a definition of what the finish is. If it's a plastic finish--urethane or such--then simply washing with limited am't of soap and water is what you do and you don't let the liquid sit on the floor afterward. Don't bathe the floor luxuriously; just spit-bath it. If you have a non-plastic finish, you would treat it differently. I have a urethane floor in kitchen, on red oak. Unfortunately, I had a gel mat laid out when our puppy peed on the floor many years ago. The urine wicked into the area under the mat and was in contact with the floor all night before we discovered it. Despite the plastic finish on the floor, the urine was able to penetrate the urethane and as you probably know, ammonia turns oak black. I have a permanent memory of my puppy that was embedded into my floor, an impossible-to-ignore black area. Perhaps it will go away if we refinish the floor but I'm not sanguine about that. My point here is that despite seeming to be bullet-proof, the urethane finish is permeable. Do not use ammonia on your floor and do not allow liquid to pool on the floor for any length of time. Well, duh! Meanwhile, keep sand and dirt out of your kitchen as much as possible--these contain abrasive particles that will sand off the urethane coating over time. They are your enemy because a wounded coating of urethane will allow liquids to permeate the wood. And discolor your oak. Florantha...See More? re cleaning kitchen hardwood floors
Comments (14)I've had wood floors in my kitchen 12 years now, 3 boys (who are on their own now) and a dog. I wipe up obvious spills when it happens, mop once/month (used to once/week when boys were here). Yes stuff gets dripped or dropped - sometimes I see it, other times not (until its dried?) I used white vinegar/water to mop. They are still beautiful. Yes if something catastrophic happens like the DW leaking it will be bad. You cannot freak about every little water drop. It will be fine. My dog drips drool sometimes and have been told that there is some kind of enzyme in their drool that does something to the finish - but I have never seen damage from his drool. It mops up same as anything else. *on a side note - we did have a "catastrophe" a month after we moved in (12 years ago) Our washer overflowed and water got down in the duct work. Moisture from that wet duct rose up to the flooring and our new floor had warped boards. Each board had curled upwards. Our homeowners insurance was going to pay for entire new hard wood floors, but the floor guy said to wait a month. (after replacing the wet duct work) our floor went back down to normal - like it never happened! I couldn't believe it - but wood will recover from moisture damage after it has time to dry out. As long as you have polyurethane one them you won't have any problems. Tell hubby to chill :)...See MoreG & S Floor Service
