New flooring. Hardwood vs Engineered?

We have been in our new home for about 8 months now and the current floors are driving me so crazy we’ve decided to replace them! We currently have random width (up to 9”) eastern pine floors. On paper they sound great, but because of their large width and our extremely dry winters and extremely humid summers they’ve expanded and contracted so much that there are now up to 1/4” gaps between them. Add in 20 years of dirt and they are just plain disgusting. I also hate the yellow/orange color of them.

So we’ve decided to replace instead of refinish but I can’t decide on what type! I love the look of European/French white oak. Some people have told me that there is less movement in an engineered floor, plus they are harder if prefinished vs site finished. Can anyone speak to this from experience? Our home is in the 2 mil range so I don’t want to put in a cheap product. Would love some thoughts! (Pic of our current floors attached and one of the look I am going for)
