Flooring is often where designers start when decorating a living room. Whether you're putting in new hardwood, covering up vinyl, choosing the right carpet or leaving the floors bare, flooring can make all the difference in your decor. Here are a few simple ideas to make sure your room stays classically chic whichever option you choose.
Keep hardwood bare. A gorgeous traditional room often requires no rug at all. Hardwood floors are clean and classic, and they blend beautifully with other elements in a neutral palette.
Choose the right size rug. When picking the right size area rug for your living room, it's important to make sure that the border of the floor on all sides of the rug is roughly the same all the way around and that the rug doesn't touch the baseboards.
Place furniture carefully. Keep at least the front legs of the sofas and chairs on the rug. In a traditional room, we prefer that all the visible furniture legs touch the rug if possible.
Use texture. Neutral furnishings are wonderful for a traditional living room, but keeping them from looking bland is crucial. A jute rug like this adds texture and depth to a sea of creamy tones.
Split up your seating areas. A cavernous room can be difficult to decorate, but dividing it into two separate sitting areas creates intimacy and makes conversation easier. Instead of using one huge rug in a room like this, identical rugs bind the spaces together while still allowing them to maintain distinct personalities.

Show off hardwood with a smaller rug. A traditional sitting area can be beautiful with bare flooring or a gorgeous rug, but there's no need to choose just one. An appropriate-size faux hide allows for the pattern of a rug with the warmth of dark flooring.
Go bold with chevron. Try putting a twist on traditional style by adding a bold chevron rug to the room. All of the classic elements remain firmly intact, while the bright, whimsical pattern of the rug adds interest.
Mix up solid colors. Blue and white is certainly one of the most classic color pairings for a soothing, sophisticated room. Different shades of the two key colors are joined together with the addition of a multifaceted rug.
Integrate small patterns. Small patterns and solid colors are staples in a traditional room. In this space, the Greek key pattern on the rug adds vibrancy to the solid colors elsewhere.
At first glance, a chevron rug may seem too busy for a traditional space, but quite often it has the effect of making a dressier space feel fun and young.
When in doubt, you can never go wrong with simple stripes. From tone-on-tone to bright colors, a striped rug complements a classic design scheme.
