Need help finding the right style of dining room table and chairs
Comments (8)I went to a couple of local stores today, just randomly chosen because they looked like they would carry formal dining furniture (Walter E. Smithe, Thomasville, and Drexel Heritage). As I expected no one had oak (except for mission which stylistically will not go with my china cabinet). So I looked for woods that were the right reddish brown color, which turned out to be, for the most part, mahogany. What I saw in all of these stores seemed to be really nice quality but I did experience sticker shock. (More from the price of the chairs than the tables: is $300 and up per chair normal? ArghÂ) I realize I havenÂt shopped for much furniture; when our kids were small utility ruled, and most of my good pieces are family antiques that I refinished myself. Subtracting the styles that wouldnÂt go and ones with distressing (I donÂt like distressing, at least not on a formal dining table), that left really only 2 tables found in 4 stores, one by Henredon and one by Thomasville. All of the stores said they had few styles on display but could order anything from the manufacturer. However ordering was what I didnÂt want to do, since I want to see the wood and workmanship close up. If I have to order anyway I might as well do it online. I have read about people on these forums ordering online but I have been concerned about getting something that is not the quality I am imagining. Are there any brands or vendors in particular I should look for, so I will not be disappointed? Comments (44)You're definitely right. I've already decided that the mirror has to go. It's 8 years old. I spent most of the afternoon trying to find a new one. No success. I could repaint the frame (wouldn't deal with the style of it, however), or just put it in another room. I need something with a simpler frame in either gold or wood tone. If the mirrors at Stenella weren't so outrageously expensive, I would've bought one there. They had a couple at Homegoods that were fake bamboo, but they were too small or too over the top. I like the height of the existing mirror for reflecting light and breaking up some of the dark blue walls....See MoreI need so much help with my tiny dining room!
Comments (11)I agree with Prairiedawnpam in that I think you need to step back, forget chairs for a moment (that's not what she said, but it's coming) and look at the bigger picture, the rooms around the dining room, whether or not you're keeping the carpet, where your whole color pallet will come from (outside of a stripe in one dining chair), whether or not you want your living/dining area and surroundings to the one 'period' look, or classical, traditional, some 'theme' (not a great idea), and what you just plain love, forgetting about 'style' altogether. Don't rush this, you're lucky enough to have a relatively blank slate and not a lot to 'fit in' to the space that you brought with you. Look at magazines, talk to people, take time to go through dedicated stores and see what really grabs you over time... and don't just rush to buy the first thing you see that's 'red', or 'square', etc. Know where you want to go with it all to some extent - your place will look better, pulled together, and your money will go a lot farther....See MoreI need help in deciding what chairs i should get for my dining table
