I think art should really speak to you. If this woman moves you then you should have her in your home. You should have her in your kitchen. Really I dont think art should be room specific as long as you love it.

I think about a dining room that IdaClaire posted a while back. It featured a HUGE painting of a gorilla. I love that gorilla and think at some point I might need a similar gorilla checking me out as I sit down for dinner. Hmmmm. Ida I just cant get that gorilla out of my mind.....

In terms of the size of the artwork, that sounds like a perfect fit for the wall you are thinking of. I am of the FILL the space mindset that you mentioned. I have a painting of a woman overlooking my dining table. She is 10 feet tall and 7 feet wide.

She wouldn't appear as looming over the table or the dining area to me. She's so interesting, I think I'd love to study the shapes, colors and shading while I'm looking at her. She's looking off into the distance and not down. She looks like she could be about to arrive for tea.

Not sure what's in her lap. I wouldn't have guessed pumpkin either, just because she seems too dressed up to just plunk a squash in her lap. I thought it was some kind of purse/bag or a wrapped bundle. She does look as though her feet hurt from those shoes, however!

IdaClaire- Yes! That's the one. She is showcasing her pearly whites and is eager to sit down to a home cooked meal. Nothing inappropriate about having a meal with someone happy to share your company. Even if that person is King Kong. Love it!

Gosh, I am so late to this thread. I love the OPs picture. Saying, "I love this portrait for reasons I can't explain", would be all I needed to hear to know this picture needs to be with you.

As for being affected by what others think, I was given some great advice once: If you want to end up in a similar situation to the person giving the opinion, then follow her/his advice, if not discard.

Dude - as an artist i have to say - its about the emotion it evokes, not the subject. its the book inside the cover, the man you marry for love not for money . design the kitchen around it.

Just wanted to share an update with you guys! I love this painting. Probably my favorite Etsy purchase.

Looks wonderful! I am glad you decided to place it there. I do think that it needs to be lowered but otherwise you have the perfect spot for your painting. Looks great with your table and chairs.

Glad you love it but it’s hung too high. Shouldn‘t be any higher than the top of the corner cabinet.

What what what! I was using the door frame as a base. So I hang at the lowest plane?

I am unaware of all the rules of hanging artwork (and the few I know I dont typically follow). I just think its too high. I would lower it about 8-10 inches, maybe more. Start with 8 inches and see how it looks.

Hang it so that it is slightly above the top of the chair back. Have the middle of the painting hit about the same height as the light switch,

The door frame and the window frame are the same height. Hanging the picture the same height as the 2 of them makes the corner cabinet look like the odd man out.

I do think it is a bit too high also. I usually keep the center at about 5', but I am only 5'4"!!!! I want to be able to look at the center straight on.

Love it, but do hang her lower. Center of art should be at approximately 60 inches from floor. You can fudge this a bit to find the perfect height, but it's a good general guide.

It's wonderful! The colors, the look on her face, the sheer SIZE of it! It looks great in the kitchen.

It's amazing the original art you can get on Etsy, so much better than the generic boring mass-produced "wall decor" that some call "art."

I thought you guys knew better than to hang art before asking me. Art goes at eye level. Eye level is lower when you're sitting down.

I have not named her yet. Not for lack of ideas, I just can’t seem to settle on one.

Fun tip- the name of the Etsy seller was “socialist realism”. I looked it up & apparently (says wikipedia) it was the official “approved artwork” of the USSR. So it’s essentially communist propaganda lol.

Grover- I don’t think I can bring myself to hang her that low! This might be one rule that I need to fudge. I am just as insecure about my low ceilings as I am about my short legs. My solution: heels all day every day & wall hangings up high.

I will lower her a little bit though ONCE SHES FIXED.

Is it common for a professional framer to produce a warped piece?

ETA: Now that I’m flipping back and forth between my photo and Grovers photo I see what you guys are saying about the height..

Aside from the fact that Grover is usually right ;-) hanging th picture lower makes the ceiling appear taller because you see more white space between the top of the picture and the ceiling- not that that is a good reason for hanging a picture at eye level- but I was thinking about your high heel analogy and all.

At any rate, the picture looks fantastic.

Grover you are so kind to always go to the trouble of photoshopping dilemmas. I have learned a lot from you.

PS And what a cool story about the origin of the art.

"Eye level" is different for a 6'5" person than a 4'10" and different when standing or sitting. So there's a lot of wiggle room there. Just hang it where it looks good to you.

If you love it then it's not weird - hang it up & live with it for a while - if you like it, leave it - if you don't, move it - use the 3M removable hanging products so if you don't like the first place you hang it you can take it down without leaving a hole in the wall.

It is an interesting piece and has merit. Glad to see an appreciation for a real piece and not some mass produced "sofa art" from Bed and Bath that is chosen because it matches the furniture. UGH!

I do like it lower for two reasons..

a) I imagine I mostly look at it while I sit (which might or might not be true)

b) I personally like when the upper.. lines of things are of different heights..it's my own, sometimes weird thing, my DH is totally different in that regard for example. I like when, say, the painting is not same height with hutch and the window,

But as I myself have some art that's deliberately hung too low or too high, because only I know how I see it better(and I think I should see it better, because I'm the one who's 24/7 in the house, after all)-I understand it must be about your inner balance with the painting, as much as it must be about its place within the room.

Rita, what you're saying about the white space between art and ceiling seems to contradict the theory/trend of hanging curtains high. Hmm. Interesting. I believe it for curtains because I've experienced it with my shower curtains at the ceiling. My eye is drawn up and I get the feeling of a long vertical line. Never tested it with art because my eye level is low. :P

Corinne, this painting looks great in your space and I hope you enjoy it for many years. I prefer it where Grover placed it and probably for the reason thinkdesignlive stated but that doesn't matter. You need to place it where YOU prefer it. :)

I hope the framer can address your concern about the warping!
