Foyer Chandelier Help

Hello all,

We are currently trying to choose a chandelier for our foyer which is 14x16 feet. I don't even know where to begin! I get so overwhelmed trying to make these decisions on my own... our home is a mix between traditional and modern i would say. We bought a half built home and the original owners were going super traditional and ornate. I tried to change as much as I could to make it as modern as possible but still definitely has traditional touches, has lots of arches. As far as lights, i like diamonds and sparkle (lol) and some modern lights, but nothing TOO modern and nothing too traditional. What size light should i be looking for?

My first view into your foyer and I can see three different types of arches in this photo. Not good. I suspect there are arches over those niches and yet another arch in the large window over your double door.

You have to keep the eyebrow arch for your front windows, but eliminate those small arch openings next to the larger arches and see if you can simply square off the corners on the openings to the living room and dining room.

Show an image of the space. We don't know if the ceiling is 8' high to 20' high.

A light fixture in a 14 x 16 room could be approx 30"+ in diameter but we can tell you what the scale of the fixture should be.

That crystal fixture you selected is VERY FORMAL and will cast lots of shadows on the walls. Are you sure that the direct you wish to go? Be careful.

Thanks for the budget. With no constraints, I seem to gravitate toward $2500+ multi-pendant fixtures for foyers. Not a comfortable budget for most people (including me). Let me know if these are too modern for you. @redifar since you already choose the two of them, the first one will do just fine and like @houssaonmentioned above, a nice round table would look awesome. Make sure to observe "scale" - not too big, not too small but just right. Good luck. Nice project.

#1 #2 #3 I lovethis one. Can you post more photos of the foyer? It's hard to get a sense of what will look good because you show so little of the space but the foyer and the dining room look like they belong in two different houses. I think the third chandelier would go great with what is shown of the blue room and its furnishings so I assume it will match the foyer as well.

One photo of foyer looking straight at the front door. I will get better pictures when i go back. You are right that light is probably too formal... i really dont know anything about lights!

Thank you and i wish i could eliminate the arches, but my husband wants them.. so the arches will have to stay. Have to work with what we have here, the people who built this home had their mind all over the place.

Your room could be beautiful, but all the different arches are a telltale sign of bad details. Keep working on your husband.

If you want a bit modern then I would maybe select a chandelier like this, place an entry table below it and place a large floral on top.

thanks... is that something super difficult to do, in order to get rid of the arches -specifically the cut out ones in the walls, those are the ones that really bother me.

My contractor dry walled right over some arched niches I had. I agree it dated m home. Not a big deal to fix. If you must keep them, I’d put some light in there and a modern type sculpture. I like that Restoration Hardware chandelier a lot. Almost picked it for my dining room but went with this one instead.

@karen rose love that light. I realize the chandelier version may be too formal... im going to talk to my husband about possibly filling in the arches but i dont think this will go too well. Any other chandelier ideas?

Yikes! Thats a lot of arches!!! Put your foot down on this and fix it now before you move in!

We can cover up these but the arched doorway will stay as is. Do you think this will look better?

OK so let's take a look at what you are suggesting

Yea i realize the last photo is the best looking , but that is really out of the question. The rooms on the inside have already been paneled and lots of money spent. The thing we can do is close off the niches. But would it potentially look worse?

@lynn - thanks and if money wasnt an object would have hired a professional.. unfortunately we weren’t able to do so and bought the home half built from someone so these things were already done.

I know this is my decision but im so lost - can you guys tell me if it would look worse to close off the niches & have it look like this? Or am i better off keeping the arches and dealing with it. I don’t mean to be annoying i just really do not know what to do here!

I’m sorry Leanna if you thought I was being preachy. Hard lessons learned:(. I know you have already spent a lot of money. I had a similar situation many years ago in a home we bought with a wall separating two rooms. I insisted it come down; hubby and Contracter said it can’t! The ceiling will fall down! I said fine, either way I’m not living in this house with that wall so figure it out! One lam beam later I moved in! Beverly gave you a wonderful solution to your dilemma. I know it came too late as you have already spent so much in the adjoining room! A consolation for not so much money could have saved you this headache. That was for future advice. Get a price on what it would take to do what you know you want.

That's okay, we are closing up the 2 arches but everything else stays as is. I know you can't see the whole house but the arched door ways are consistent throughout. That's just the way the house was and it doesn't bother us enough to change. In the meantime, i really could use help with a light... the photos above are a little too modern for my taste. do you think anything like this could work?'
