I know exactly what you mean! I hate those things! I'm redoing my mothers kitchen and she hated those too so originally wanted to replace 2 of the 3 existing ceiling fixtures with a ceiling hugging pendant type with a longer pendant over the table. I explained that all those hanging in her small kitchen would be too busy and the other 2 would be competing with the pendant that will go over the table so talked her into letting me install 2 recessed potlights for the other 2. One over the back door entry and one in the work area...That left a clean ceiling so the only thing that will catch the eye is the pendant over the table and the one over the sink! I'm going to start a post of the kitchen update since the potlights are only thing installed so far...if I can figure out how! (kinda new here)

Lots of fans have a ceiling hugging option. Hunter makes 15 at least different ones, although the "flower power" model may not appeal to your husband. :-) On the left look for Features, choose more, and then choose can be used with ceiling 8ft and under. I've also noticed that light kits and replacement globes for ceiling fans are harder to find locally. You could try the websites for hardware/home stores as they often have a greater variety than is stocked in their stores. They may also allow shipping to a local store where you can pick up the item. That is a good way to ensure you get the item and it is in good condition. Otherwise, you might have to buy from an online store. In general these have the greatest selection. The hallway looks under lit, I would install a 4” flush can there and add one or two more in the same hallway to even out the light (they are cheap and easy to Install) If you like warm traditional lighting make sure the cans are 2700 or 3000 kelvin. That frees you up in the bedrooms to get anything you want. Some people like ceiling fans in bedrooms too...
