Fan of the Ceiling
The first time I visited New York City, I (like many people, I’m sure) couldn’t keep my eyes in front of me. I looked straight up the whole time. NYC is so much taller than the cities I was used to (Washington, DC and Baltimore) and the view from the street is famously breathtaking.
There’s a lot the home designer can learn from the Manhattan experience. All too often, the ceiling gets little attention in the overall design of a room – unfortunate, as a cool ceiling adds a ton of depth and interest to any space.

This dramatic ceiling offers light, warmth and texture to a simply designed room. I especially like how the dark wood floor is echoed in the light fixture, creating a floor-to-ceiling connection.
What a luxurious, yet rustic, space. These lofty ceilings make this space feel absolutely huge, but the use of wood and warm hanging lights keep it from being cold. I love the way the wood echoes the outdoors that are so clearly visible through the windows.
This giant skylight floods the space in natural light, making a palette of neutral whites and grays come alive.
This space combines both light and dark in a cool skylight-wood combination. The effect is modern and warm - and very cool.
Ceilings don't need to be flat. I like how just a slightly different use of wood on the right side of this ceiling adds a great deal of interest - and works as a room definer in this open space.
In the right kind of traditional space, an elaborate Baroque ceiling is dramatic and fascinating. This Parthenon-like dome is over the top, but amazing.
Painting just a part of the ceiling is an inexpensive way to add a modern, interesting touch to a room. I love how the brown ceiling here adds sophistication, especially when balanced by plain white walls.
I love the scale of it, as well as the color. It's the perfect fun complement to fairly neutral furniture.
