The historic architecture of Edgartown looks wild and crazy compared to Nantucket, however, the variety of architecture on the Vineyard is impressive. I took some French friends through the historic district and it felt like a final exam in architectural history. Of course, they didn't think the 1700's were very old. Unfortunately, the very early buildings have been lost. Vacation houses arrived in the 20's. Ahearn's favorite style is the Shingle Style and its the most eclectic style of all, allowing much room for personal expression and he makes good use of it. You have a lovely house but it looks chopped up. The two parts, each with a door, kinda makes your house look like a semi-detached house. I think once you decide on your windows, you should try and make this house look more cohesive. Perhaps changing the colour of your siding to match closer to the grey shake colour and not white like you are thinking. I would definitely play down the door on the right and make it disappear. Perhaps you could achieve this with landscaping and really make your actual front door be the focal point. Maybe plant mid-sized shrubs and a couple freestanding trellises with climbing plants so it's blocked off from the front door and hidden or partially hidden from the street. It doesn't look like you have a sidewalk to the door on the right which you could add. I think your goal should be cleverly disguising the utility door so your actual front door is the focal point by unifying styles and colours and adding landscaping.

@decoenthusiaste Thanks so much for your input, I am leaning on agreeing with you at this point as I really don't want the room to appear any smaller than it is. @Cheryl Smith You are correct, the entry door is opposite the knee-wall door, but that run of wall before the dormer is not long enough for the bed, night stands and to still have access to the closet. After a lot of thought, the bed fits best and makes the most sense against the far wall with the window. @njmomma Thanks so much for the pictures, I had never thought about a blue door previously, but I kind of really like it!

Why have I never seen a new design that looks as good as the inspiration? Look at the space between the fascia and window head on 2nd floor. Look at space between wall and window on 1st floor -- imagine that from the inside too. Compare the small window over the entry. Compare the arched entrance to the porch -- how it seems to be as wide as possible, probably because you wanted double doors, and yes, the arch should mimic the windows. Windows -- yours have an equal number of panes 1st and 2nd floors, and why are the garage windows different? Garage looks like it was smashed into the side of the house, and those garage roof planes are in the running for worst ever here on houzz. Guessing your lot is too small to accommodate the house and garage. The front wall of the garage needs to be pushed back several feet so it is behind the front wall of the house.
