What kind of garage design should I consider for this house?
Comments (3)The garage doors that you've pictured are very pricy and probably more than an entire "moderate" budget. Also, enclosing the carport will create a structure the dominates the home because of it's position in front of the house. I would recommend not doing the project at all, or saving more money to address the issue in a major way, perhaps moving it, or going for an all glass enclosure ala the famous Ferrari garage from Ferris Bueller. You might explore using polycarbonate greenhouse panels instead of glass to reduce costs and increase the design flexibility and just save up for the fancy garage doors....See MoreExtended Cape - exterior design / door question
Comments (5)Thanks! Really appreciate those thoughts. I hate the shutters so Iām glad to hear I can / should remove them from a design standpoint. There is currently a temporary (gravel) walkway to the 2nd door as when we redid the front I did not want a door in the middle of the grass. But, the brick paver walk goes directly to the 1st door. No guest has ever gone to the double doors. Thanks for your thoughts on the yews - they are blocking a retaining wall which Iād like to redo in a few years. We re-landscaped the upper front lip (canāt see in the pic due to the slope) and it is much nicer but street view is still those yews and would be the retaining wall....See MoreMudroom entry design question
Comments (2)Mid Century Modern in the County sounds beautiful and refreshing! You are questioning the functionality of the space plan. Closets are a means of storage and by definition their primary function involves closing actions, ie we store things away after weāve used them. If the storage area remains at the opening of the mudroom, the second and third members entering the room will have issues with access (especially during colder months when we tend to wear more layers) and the space will always feel cluttered and small because all the activity in congested in one area. If you re arrange the room placing the closet on the wall opposite the entry, it will open up the space to accommodate all 4 members plus an additional person when entering. Remote locations require more functional storage. By moving the closet to the wall opposite the entry youāll add about 8 sqft in closet space. Whether there is a closet or hooks in your mudroom does not matter in terms of resale value, the square footage and its defined space is the value. I recommend the closet, as your family grows the added storage will help manage growing interest and transitional moments, it will add personal value. You are an individual your home should be designed to provide aspects of your individual needs. I would not remove the front entrances; every entrance serves an important purpose which helps your family interact comfortably with your home. Based on the information youāve provided, your children use the side door to safely enter the home, comfortably remove outerwear and seamlessly proceed to homework. Your family enters your home safely protected from the elements via your garage. Only your family and friends know where the main entrance to your home is, which adds to your security. -Alley...See MoreDesign Question - Exterior French Doors
Comments (0)We have a set of exterior French doors leading to the deck in the back of our living room. They are located between two built in book shelves. I think they are beautiful and let in a ton of natural light; but, we NEVER use them. Iād rather people use a different entrance to avoid tracking dirt and mud directly on our living room rug. We are finally getting around to updating the LR and I have a design question - can I treat these doors as a wall and place furniture in front of them? I was thinking of removing the door handle and capping it (to make it flush) and putting a small settee in front of them. Overall objective is to make a conversation area there with two accent chairs flanking the settee. However, Iām not sure if this set up would be a design āno-no.ā Any feedback is appreciated!...See MoreAshley Moses
