What should i do in this alcove above fireplace?
This is a 4' x 8' alcove above our fireplace in our living room. Our living room furniture includes a black sofa and loveseat and 2 white recliners, with a large black area rug. I'd like to keep the black & white theme going...was thinking of going with a large picture, but haven't found one yet. The picture i have up now is an old one that i put up temporarily. Would love some ideas...going for a modern look. Thanks! :)

Fireplace · More InfoYou could do some sort of rock in that space; showing this photo for color tone of grey/white. You could go look at your local flooring store for other stone options as well if you do not find a picture to hang there,

Comments (28)Before the demolition started, the entire room was paneled. There was wood everywhere! I guess the wall on the right that was paneled balanced out the doors that were on the left cabinet, wood box and old mantel. We have replaced all the wood in the rest of the house with white doors and mouldings and all the walls are painted a light color. Since yours have somehow survived in their present location you might simply remove the above ground foliage after a light killing frost and heavily mulch the rhizomes to prevent freezing: otherwise you can simply dig the rhizome clump and store in a cool moist area and prevent the rhizomes for drying out. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoHA, the dreaded alcove. Well, yours isn't as bad as most. Usually I recommend drywall over the niche.
Take the 3 jars and move them in away from the alcove border so they're almost touching the painting.
You should go ahead and get a floating frame for the painting. It will look more finished. Try a black frame. Right now the painting disappears into the background. A frame is what you need.
Then you hang the painting about 4 inches from the mantel.
This is a black floating frame. Very simple and modern.
