Need help! 'non granite, marble or slate' fireplace surround???
Comments (11)I use a photo editing program (MS Digital Imaging Suite, which is discontinued :( I capture images from the net with ScreenPrint Platinum and then cut and paste materials into the photo. It's pretty much cut & paste, although I have taken to a lot of the other tools to work with color and blending, etc. Someone recently posted a free photo editing program ... You can either superimpose (paste) or also cut the stone out of your original picture and place the new material behind in the blank space, which might be an easy way for you to go. Usually the net images are too bright, so tone down the color a bit using the saturation and lightness/darkness features in the coloring tools. Feathering the edges with the blur tool is another good tip. I would say it seems you have enough detail with the grill and mantel, so it's hard to imagine putting pebbles in, which does seem off in style as well with the mantel. Not that we need any rules :) I do think they look very pretty together with a simple, plain surround, though. I only tried the soapstone, low contrast, which I find keeps it very simple to let the details of the mantel and grill shine. Everything shouldn't be calling for attention or it will get too busy and confusing to look at. I'm sure you know what I mean :) Such beautiful pieces!...See MoreThis fireplace surround is cheap and ugly!
Comments (20)You're right. It's a mess. Not to put too fine a point on it.... :>) Look at Lyban's exanple, and at Annie's first example, to see what the proportion issue is. At the moment, your mantel is too skimpy, your tiles are too big, your side sections are too narrow, and the molding around the tiles is too small and uninteresting. So it needs some rejiggering to fix those issues. Pal is right about adding the chimney breast above. I would: ...pull off all the trim, and build the false wall above (taking care to line the sides up precisely with the sides of your lower section, not the edge of the mantel shelf). ...install a deeper and more fully trimmed mantel to reduce the dimension of the section between the firebox and the bottom of the mantel assembly. ...pull off the tiles and replace them with tiles that are a quarter the size of the ones there now (which look like floor or shower wall tiles) with a glossier finish, or whatever you like, and build the wall in around those. ...and add molding around the tiles that is the right style and heft to bring the whole thing into proportion....See MoreIs this fireplace surround original to our 1918 Foursquare?
Comments (41)Bungalowmo - Wow, I definitely see the similarities, as well! But wish our front door came with that stained glass - gorgeous!! We've found that ours is a mix of craftsman, colonial and victorian influences. But that's what makes her so interesting and we fully intend to keep her quirks intact. :) ESPECIALLY those wavy glass windows - my DH is taking the kitchen windows out right now to restore, re-cord and repair a little wood rot, then will pop them back in. He's doing it one window at a time until he makes it through the entire house. Bless his heart. :)...See MoreHi I'm April ("Title must have at least 15 characters")
Comments (76)Thank you...your kindness overwhelms. you know, I did go to my beloved Jerusalem there, for just a few days, the only thing I truly did for myself only, don't remember whether I mentioned that..went in August, very spontaneously...and I had this very nice very extravert type of a taxi driver to take me there..and very soon he chatted out of me all the story.. So he says, at some point: -ok I understand what do you want for your Mother..and I understand about your brother..and I understand about the husband and kids. That, I get it -what you worry about regarding them all. But how do you see your life? YOURS? And I sat there and I didn't know what to answer him. And I still don't. I still think "me? what me?" then I think "what life?" then I think "let me have this life first". then I'll try to see what I can see.. Maybe I'll edit that later btw. Doesn't make any sense when I try to read it..Except for the first sentence of course....See Moreolivejuice1190
