Cottage Fireplace Surround SOOOOOO ugly!
Comments (37)Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I know the vintage (late 1940s) and value of the knotty pine. The essence of "cottage" will indeed remain, but I do sometimes wish for a "pickled" brighter look -- influenced by much time spent on beach/cottage blogs linked from earlier posts. i think w/a few thoughtful decor changes (the fireplace surround and improved bookshelf visuals) I can brighten the room up w/o making major changes. As this is a summer home for us, it tends to get second-hand extras and lots of beloved cast-offs that I have no idea what to do with otherwise. Your input here makes sense...lots to condense and clean up. Yay! Another excuse to spend even MORE time here and on other forums than i already do. On another note, Sweeby: I'm so impressed by your astute memory, but it's a strange coincidence re: the urns. I picked them up at an estate sale years ago, and have often wondered about them. Mine are almost identical to the ones posted, but are extremely heavy (are ashes that heavy?). Makes me think maybe something is inside them...never thought to look. I'll be down at the house shortly, and will look more closely. If there's a treasure inside, maybe I'll be able to afford a decorator to come fix up the fireplace. Stay tuned here, and I'll post back....See MoreHow can I solve this tile around my fireplace problem? It's ugly!
Comments (9)I would hold off. Is it marble? Is it original to the house? Your house is older and the fireplace did work at one point. Have someone in to find out what the problem is and whether it can be fixed. Then think and think some more... In other words the only thing I would do immediately is get rid of the paneling (it might be brick underneath) and strip the paint off the mantle and surround, which is VERY pretty... This house needs tlc by undoing the various "updates" from past owners......See MoreHelp...my fireplace surround is ugly and I need to give it character.
Comments (9)HI -- There is two much texture and busy pattern with the brick going one way and the wood going another ...it's cluttered and dark looking . If the wood can be removed then do that and replace with drywall and or tile that in the same direction as the bricks , on the horizontal. I would paint that whole wall one color like the wall color . Then the texture speaks for itself . You say you don't want to spend too much so a live edge shelf/mantel would be very expensive . So basically you just need to simplify the look of that whole wall so it blends into the room and looks more modern ....See MoreHelp with ugly fireplace
Comments (2)Have you thought about painting the gold trim with high heat matte black paint? It will take three light coats. https://www.brightgreendoor.com/spray-paint-a-brass-fireplace/...See MoreLyban zone 4
