Replacing GE Adora FL washer - should we replace dryer too?
Comments (3)When I moved from my old trusty Maytag top load 712 series washer and dryer to the front load neptunes, the most significant difference between the old dryer and new dryer was about 17 years. Almost the same exact operation between the two and very nearly the same mechanical components. I dont really thing dryer technology has changed much in nearly 40 years. keep the dryer if it works fine....See MoreWhat surge protector should I buy for my washer & dryer?
Comments (14)Unplugging is not a reliable solution for a long list of reasons. First, a most unreliable solution means human intervention. Second, even early 20th Century ham radio operators disconnected their antennas, put the lead inside a mason jar, and still suffered damage. Damage stopped only when the antenna lead was earthed. That is the only reliable solution used everywhere that damage cannot happen. Your telco's computer is connected to overhead wires all over town. They disconnect - stop all phone service - everytime a thunderstorm approaches? Of course not. With about 100 surges during each storm, well, how often is your entire town without phone service for four days? Never? Because every telco everywhere in the world uses a solution that is reliable. Only effective protector is located where wires enter the building - the 'whole house' protector. AND earthing must be upgraded to both meet and exceed post 1990 code. No protector - not even the 'whole house' protector - provides protection. Protection is always the earth ground. Earthing both meets and exceeds code so that nobody knows any surge existed. A properly earthed 'whole house' protector earths even direct lightning strikes - and remains functional. The reason for earthing and a 'whole house' protector is ... well your telco never disconnects during thunderstorms - and must never suffer damage. Same reason why informed homeowners upgrade earthing for that one protector - and use computers routinely during every thunderstorm. Again, why is the 'whole house' protector so highly recommended and effective? No protector provides protection. Protection is always about where energy dissipates. A protector is only as effective as its earth ground....See MoreShould I have 2 washers and dryers?
Comments (11)I do between 30 and 40 loads per week and I use two washers (Euro Fls: Asko and Miele), but only one dryer as most of my stuff gets line dried, even in the winter. If you never hang your laundry out, you will need a dryer for each washer. Two washers do make laundry more efficient, but when one is off-line for some reason I can still get it done, however it becomes a constant preoccupation. If you haven't used FLs before I would get one pair, first, then add another if you find you need it. Some FLs are truly enormous, but even the smaller 5 kilo Euros like mine do as much or more than large capacity top loaders. It doesn't look as though they can, but they do. To settle this in your mind take a typical load of laundry that you do now and weigh it dry. If it weighs 11 pounds of less, it would be fine in a 5 kilo machine; if it weighs 13 pounds, then you should look at 6 kilo or the larger US machines. Most people who take the trouble to do this test are surprised to realize how "small" their current "large" loads are when considering the capacity of front loaders. When considering enormous Fls, though consider whether you would lose efficiency if you only have partial loads of a particular type of laundry. The most time (and energy) efficient set-up is when the machine corrrectly matches (in capacity) your basic sorted quantities. I have much-older Miele machines, of models that are no longer available. They have performed flawlessly for years. I would hesitate to replace them with current models as I don't like the selection of options available, but for most people the current Mieles will be just fine. Miele machines are however, shockingly expensive - though not when one considers the generally superb quality of Miele. A somewhat cheaper choice would be machines from Asko. I have had their washing machines for going on 16 years now, and I have been very pleased with them. I have great affection for the brand as it was my first FL. Don't worry about reaching the controls of a stacked pair, for retrieving or loading the lower machine. Unless you have unusual mobility constraints, any of the machines will be fine. (Though I do admire the design smarts of the LG pair that moved the panels to the center of the stack.) HTH Molly~...See MoreShould I return the dryer (again)?
Comments (8)Thanks. We shortened that vent hose thing in the back and the dryer did a regular cycle! It still took it 1 hr to dry my load, but it was a pretty full load, with heavy materials (ie sweatpants, sweat shirts, jeans, etc). and I was watching it like a hawk -- it sat at 7 minutes FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRR (lol, it was definately longer than 7 minutes) but after about 15 minutes, it started counting down again -- I just think the sensor is sensing the clothes are still damp, and acclamating the time to dry it appropriately. does that make sense? when it senses they are no longer damp, it continued on with the cool down. i feel better, but I am still not 100% convinced... I'll have to do some more laundry to make sure i'm not just telling myself it is fixed, kwim? Do you think this sounds like normal behavior though?...See Morewdccruise
