So you have done this backwarsd , choosing paint color comes after furniture choices now you are going to have a problem because you need to work with wall color.With tha color which is not too bad but steers you toward browns I think I would look for something in a taupey leather that works with the paint .Or maybe a navy blue to take you away from browns altogether. Yes a designer would be a good idea .

Since this isn't your forever home (assuming you'll not be renting this place forever, right?) I'd not purchase furniture/furnishings to accommodate a carpet and wall colors you don't even like. I'd figure out what kind of room you'd LOVE to have, one you can recreate when you have your own home (if that's a possibility in the future) or even a different rental, and purchase things that will work in your dream room. For not much $, you can get a good sized area rug to make you couch color choice work; just cover a good portion of the brown carpet. Same with wall coverings. I would think you could get something more exciting and modernish (with more color) than a fake brick paper. Decide on the couch color you'd love to have, then select a complementary temporary wallpaper. I'd ignore the beige walls; they are neutral enough to go with lots of furniture colors and when you get some pieces in the room that actually have color, the beige will fade into the background. Watch your craigslist, scour 2nd hand and thrift stores for some interesting art that's not mass produced Home Goods type art. You can watch for area rugs on CL, too, or check out esalerugs.com for reasonably priced rugs (look at synthetic, polypropylene rugs. They are quite inexpensive.) and you can get free shipping and returns. Sometimes Home Depot has decent looking area rugs for not much $.

I’m following this post because I have the same issue with my living room — dark brown couch and very dark floors — brown overkill! Can I ask for more specific advice, if possible? Should my rug be mostly ivory, with tan accents? Or will the tan color bring in more “brown?” Should I paint the brown wooden top on my fireplace white to eliminate some of the brown in the room? Are you asking for a rug color? Or a tile to adjoin this one? If you are looking for a tile in the living area that can go next to this kitchen tile then post some photos of the spaces. If you have to use tile, I would try to find a solid light taupe that blends with the kitchen tile, but I think a better option would be to use one tile throughout all the spaces, or maybe put a hardwood in the living area.
