Something like this rug and this coffee table (only larger) You need pattern and contrast in your room. Agree that a light stone coffee table surface would work. Or glass on an industrial base. Do not buy one more brown piece and only chairs, tables, etc. up on legs to balance out all the bulk in the room. Make sure to get a very oversized rug which covers as much dark floor as possible, large enough so that the front legs of your sofas and chairs fit on the rug.

Great space with lots of potential. You will definitely need a lighter rug. I like the one Jan suggested. I don't give advice, unless I can see all 4 walls of the space, because design decisions cannot be made in isolation.

Suggestions:

1) Before you buy anything, you need to arrange the furniture correctly.

2) Right now, one of the recliners is sitting in a walkway, which is not ideal. I'd like to see that moved, if possible.

3) Is there a tv in the space?

4) Please post photos of all 4 angles of the room., so that I can advise you as to furniture arrangement and make decisions from there.

This is my living room. I have a 82 inches TV that cannot be moved. My husband has said excluding TV and his recliner I can make any changes to the room :). Thanks so much for your comments. I am now hopeful, I would be able to make this place beautiful.

I'd move the 3-seater forward to meet arms with the 2-seater. Foot traffic walks behind the 3-seater. Get a large light-colored rug and light pillows.

If you do keep art over the fireplace, it is hung too high and the purple color is not working, I do like the blues in the pillows

The 3- seater right in front of TV . Yes we cannot move TV as he feels when he reclines and watches TV, the TV will not be not at his eye level :(.

It looks like a gas fireplace? So, you could consider lowering the mantle and placing tv over the mantle. Would you be willing to do that?

I know I am harping on one item, but that tv is just swallowing up your room and crammed into a corner.

You did a lovely job. A rug and some pillows that coordinate with art and chairs, if they're staying, will bring the room to another level. Going forward on Houzz, it's always a good idea to post photos from all four sides since spaces should connect in style, color, feeling. Lighter color rug as most people have stated. Your drapery is beautiful and looks custom.

They are just a tad too long. They should just kiss the floor, not buckle as some of them do.

The 2 white chairs don't seem to fit in the room right now. Maybe they will look better with a lighter colored rug.

excel_science, those coffee tables are a little clunky. You need something to create some "air" in the room, yet not too dainty.

Please pull the sofa forward. Arms of sofa and love seat should almost tough each other. Chairs are not working in there.

As an alternative, you can remove the loveseat and add a couple of chairs where the love seat is. However, they will need to be a little more substantial then the current slipper chairs. You can use the slipper chairs as a "stand in" to give you a feel for it.

The first thing you need to do is to choose art for above the fireplace (if you won't be moving the tv). Going forward, this will inform your other choices.

What is the size of the art you have there now? Here is one suggestion. Is this something you'd like? This would pull in the blues and taupes in your fireplace, as well as the brown furniture.

See how your current table has legs and "air" under it? The tables you suggested are solid pieces. You already have 2 large chunky sofas. I'd get a coffee table with legs.

You also have 3 focal points, right in a row: fireplace, bookshelves, tv.

Since you cannot move the tv, I'd take all of the small things off of the bookcase and fill it with books, so that it "disappears" as a focal point.

I am really having trouble with that TV, Built-in bookcase and fireplace all in that corner. Does the fireplace work? Do you use it? Somewhat along the lines of what CDR was saying, how about painting the whole built-in the same color as the wall. That would help diminish its look since you won't be moving the TV. I might also consider a smaller layered art arrangement on the mantel so there isn't another "large" block of interest over the fireplace further competing with the TV. I'll play with some mock ups and see what I can come up with for you. bbl

Have you decided on sofa arrangement? You need that before you will know what size and shape coffee table will work best.

How about one of the drop down fireplace mounts Then he could have tv at eye level and u could move the furniture as suggested.

The more I read these threads the more it NAILS home “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”.
If there’s one thing I find an eyesore, it’s a TV. I don’t mean that I don’t have one. It means I would never place it in a position of prominence. How Flo kept it in it’s space (to keep your husband happy, which is important in your life) but minimized it’s presence is perfect.
I love fireplaces. They are beautiful (or should be). It drives me crazy to see screens above them. It’s not even a good setup anyway. Bad height, as your husband mentioned.
Light rug, light table, digital clock removal as mentioned above.

I have done that, light rug, light table and digital clock removal. Now working on the wall above fire place. As suggested by you all, looking for a mirror :). Will surely share the final result once I put it all together. Can't thanks you all enough :))

Hi. I am not sure anyone suggested a mirror over the fireplace. I'd have to look back. Flo depicted a starburst mirror. They normally have a small, convex, reflective center. The overall goal is to eliminate having 3 focal points, which you have now. So, your eye should sort of gloss over the fireplace.

And that’s why I didn’t select big mirror but rather starburst so it is somewhat reflective but not reflecting TV and draws eye away from TV.

Are you sure you don't have an extra room for a man cave? Just a recliner and TV there and you're done. Then this room can be brought up to your design desire.

Notice that in Flo's depiction, there is nothing in the shelves. Even with that, it still looks busy to me. My eye is darting all over.

If you want to add something to the shelves, what I would do is to decorate the shelves and the mantle in one theme. For example

1) Vases on the shelves and vases on the mantle

2) Large starburst over mantle and smaller starbursts on shelves.

Finally, I would paint your mantle and shelves the same color. It's been awhile: did we talk about the possibility of removing the shelves?

I’m following this post because I have the same issue with my living room — dark brown couch and very dark floors — brown overkill! Can I ask for more specific advice, if possible? Should my rug be mostly ivory, with tan accents? Or will the tan color bring in more “brown?” Should I paint the brown wooden top on my fireplace white to eliminate some of the brown in the room?
