I think the only thing that wouldn't go well with that (plain white tile) would be something in a similar, but only slightly different color - a perfect match or a definitive contrast is always better than something that looks like you just couldn't find a match so went with the nearest thing. Carpet will look fine as will any wood, and I think what's more important is the colors in them vs the colors in the walls, and/or whether or not the tile is the only white thing in the whole adjoining area, especially if it's particularly dark.

Thank you so much Lori for that very detailed explanation!! I feel very excited to buy a sample size of Balboa Mist to try out in our home. I think it would be an absolutely lovely color and definitely reassures me it was not a random choice!! I will update with news after I do the cardboard test. Thank you so much again! Ooh! I did forgot and should have posted earlier, but I was thinking of during the living room wall into an accent wall. I don't mind doing something sort of fun or different. The previous owners made this the accent wall and went with a shade lighter so we're considering keeping it an accent wall. If I choose this I might just do a shade lighter or darker of my paint choice. OR! Make this accent wall, on the wall with the door leading to patio. We are planning to swap out curtains and do a french door on that wall so it might make those white doors pop. Kinda of leaning towards this if we go with a 'stronger' color' Which wall is better for the accent wall? Or do neither work well? We were thinking of something like the color of the cabinets in this photo. Too intense? Feel free to suggest other colors.

Such a nice space! All that wood is going to boss around your decorating. You are smart to try to work with it instead of fight it with cool colors. I think orange is definitely out as an accent color. It is just going to enhance the orange tones of the wood. I would consider painting all the doors in the dining space, it will make the space look less chopped up. I saw on another thread that you are replacing the kitchen floor. Have you considered a slate look tile with faint brown accents? Your floor will have a nice clean look and the accents will work with the wood and will look good with your taupe cabinets. Daltile porcelain slate.

I was about to suggest the same. These are pine. They are not worth "saving" as a wood-look product. In fact the original attempt at stain is a bad one. Pine doesn't like taking stain. It really really doesn't. As Hallett & Co. suggests, invest in some HIGH QUALITY primer (Zinsser or better) and some decent sanding materials. Make sure you purchase primer that is SPECIFICALLY designed to go over oil based finishes/polyurethane. Paint the trim whatever colour you desire (I suggest white...it is much easier to coordinate than any other colour). Just by doing this ONE thing, you will have updated your home by 40 years. I kid you not.
