Area Rug - What to do what to do?!?!

Good Day-- I am looking for an area rug for my family room. This is an open area that joins my kitchen and family room; there is a small step that separates the kitchen from the family room. I like to keep a modern concept and want to keep the space light and open. I'm looking at 8x10, 9x12 and 10x14 area rugs.

Measure the total width of the sectional. You want a rug to slip under the front 1/3 of the seats portions and entirely under the chaise part. The rug should extend past the outside two arm ends of the sofa by a foot or more.

Do you want contemporary, traditional, modern??? We need to know your preferences like patterns or solid, tribal or oriental. Just give us an idea of colors you like etc., it helps so much.

I'm 100% behind Vetiverts' idea. Dig out some of that mossy and compacted dirt, and lay a nice bed of gravel. While your at it, do a thorough job and bury the downspout extentions, which arent very attractive. Contain it all with some edgeing for a tidy look, and lay those flat patio stones for ease of walking. Problem solved forever. (well, for a long time anyway) A Hydrangea would disguise the entry, and they love the east side of any bldg. If you want some greenery next to the foundation, set large empty pots upside down to prevent the gravel from covering the soil, and then reverse and cut out the bottom in the Spring, for ease of planting fern, hosta and columbines. All three will do better for having the gravel mulch. I have columbines all over in a gravel path from a walkway to patio, and all self seeded. But, whatever you decide, you certainly will need a way to get thru the area, so you really should recycle those patio blocks. Going green is all the rage now, I hear. Ive done it all my life, and people just called me 'cheap'. Anything you do will look better than that plantain and other weedy stuff, right? You really need to keep a walkway thru for firefighters, if for no other reason. Do those huge arborvitae belong to your neighbor? My neighbor on the East side planted a short row of the same, which grows within 6 ft of my home, and it turned the vinyl siding green! Now I have to have that East wall pressure washed every couple of years. What a bummer. Good luck with your project. Let us know what you decide. Pondy

Could you get two single door cabinets, one of the shorter height and one of the taller height and fill in the small resulting gap with a filler? Barring that I see: Fill it in with a matching panel Fill it in with drywall and paint it the same color as the dropped area. Drop the ceiling at least as far as the gap I wouldn't call extra attention to it's oddness by doing something "different" with it.

You might want to bite the bullet and choose two plants to keep and cut the rest at the base. That might give the most chance for the two remaining ones to thrive and produce big fruits.

I am not a designer, but I have been looking at rugs for my new sectional that was just ordered that is close to your color and style of sectional so I will post what I have found that I like. I am not very adventurous by the way!

You have very nice furniture but gray without any warm colors to balance it is boring and becoming a cliche. I would find a beautiful and interesting carpet with warm and cool colors, and use these colors in pillows and other accessories to tie your scheme together. The most successful rooms often have three colors which gives rich layers to a room, rather than the flatness of one or two cool colors or the overdone look of too many warm colors. It should be a balancing act between the two and that makes for an interesting and very livable room.

I would scroll through the threads on these forums because it seems that several times every week someone asks basically the same question. There are an abundance of gray sectionals with owners looking for gray rugs with blue accents. I agree that your sectional is very pretty and would look even better with some color enfused in your room.
