We have this odd little area....what do I do with it?

We are at the beginning of a huge kitchen gut and remodel. But before we pick up the sledge hammers - which I am dying to do - we have to figure out what to do about a odd space above one of our cabinets. The kitchen has a 6" drop ceiling in the middle of the kitchen. Taking it out is not an option :( We don't want to lower all the cabinets to the right of it. The drop ceiling ends at an awkward spot to try and extend the cabinet below it. So, what do we do with it? Wood panel to cover it? Leave it open? Help!!!!

Hi, LovesPurple. Odd little problem pretty much describes it. Regardless of that little hole, it seems as if it would be best to start the area of tall cabinets where the dropped ceiling ends, letting the open counter area extend a bit farther. That way the drop would be integrated into the whole and look as if it belonged. And, of course, this would take care of the little leftover.

Maybe a filler panel? Or one shelf to divide in half horizontally and use it for platter storage?

I don't know what to tell you either but wanted to give a little support for you and your hubby. I hope he is recovering nicely! I always wrap things in sheets and blankets if I'm afraid they will freeze. I also put any pots I may have (which aren't many) on the side of my house that is sheltered from the north wind. There is quite a temp difference in that area and that's where they spend the winter. That may not work at your place, though.

What do I do with this odd shower/window placement?

We have a very similar layout in our bathroom. We are doing a 3.5x4' shower & eliminating the tub all together. Our tub is right under the window with a tiny little shower in the corner where your tub is. We are taking the shower all the way to the window. This will not be a "dream" bathroom for us, but we are on a budget & this fits the budget best. We are not willing to put $20K into our bathroom at this point.

I would consider taking down the walls to the closet and make a mud room type storage with benches and storage. Do you have pets? You could make it a pet area (bench for dog/cat to sit in window). Or put shelves along the closet side wall with various plants? Might make a neat spot for an herb garden!

It’s an open loft so there will be light regardless. The little window faces west, no view out that window except the roof. I think I’ll just ignore it to start. To be honest I’m not sure the room will get slept in much. The two beds are antiques inherited from my husband’s grandmother. They are an odd size at 30” wide by 78” long. So only really comfortable for kids. However, I love them and have always wanted a spot to use them. My kids are grown and we are years away from grandchildren I think. It is a nice spot for a nap or to read, I sit up there with my iPad and the little dogs love the little beds lol. Once my daughter settles down and has her own place they are promised to her. In the meantime I’m going to enjoy them.

rosie - the cabinet below the space is for the microwave, to the left of the microwave is essential counterspace next to the stove, to the right of the microwave is a much needed pantry. DH thinks I should make a stained glass panel for it...

Could you get two single door cabinets, one of the shorter height and one of the taller height and fill in the small resulting gap with a filler?

Barring that I see:

Fill it in with a matching panel

Fill it in with drywall and paint it the same color as the dropped area.

Drop the ceiling at least as far as the gap

I wouldn't call extra attention to it's oddness by doing something "different" with it.
