What do I do with this odd corner?

Converting our front coat closet to more of a utility room and not sure what to do with this weird space to the right of it that I think was for hanging plants back in the 70s. Any alternate uses or ideas with moving the wall or something? It's about 2.5' wide x 3' deep.

Are you thinking of taking down the closet walls? That could open up the space. The window in that nook brings in some nice light. Is that the front door to the right? lafdr

I would consider taking down the walls to the closet and make a mud room type storage with benches and storage. Do you have pets? You could make it a pet area (bench for dog/cat to sit in window). Or put shelves along the closet side wall with various plants? Might make a neat spot for an herb garden!

Could you get two single door cabinets, one of the shorter height and one of the taller height and fill in the small resulting gap with a filler? Barring that I see: Fill it in with a matching panel Fill it in with drywall and paint it the same color as the dropped area. Drop the ceiling at least as far as the gap I wouldn't call extra attention to it's oddness by doing something "different" with it.

Have rounded drywall corners, do I do rounded baseboard?

The rounded corner pieces in my Spanish style house have a profile that exactly matches that of the baseboard. I wouldn't accept any other option. If anyone is building -- do not do rounded corners for drywall, baseboards, windows, doors, etc. It just adds a level of complexity to basic things like painting. We bought the house with them, but I really hate them! When we added a guest house, I told the contractor I wanted simple easy 90 degree corners and beefy trim around windows and doors ... and no rounded sheetrock anywhere.

What would you do about this odd little window?

It’s an open loft so there will be light regardless. The little window faces west, no view out that window except the roof. I think I’ll just ignore it to start. To be honest I’m not sure the room will get slept in much. The two beds are antiques inherited from my husband’s grandmother. They are an odd size at 30” wide by 78” long. So only really comfortable for kids. However, I love them and have always wanted a spot to use them. My kids are grown and we are years away from grandchildren I think. It is a nice spot for a nap or to read, I sit up there with my iPad and the little dogs love the little beds lol. Once my daughter settles down and has her own place they are promised to her. In the meantime I’m going to enjoy them.

What is behind the alcove wall? Would it make sense to open it up from the other side if you don't want the space in the dining room? I know I need storage in my house and am interested in finding and accessing hollow space, like under the stairs, rather than creating more hollows. With that idea, you could have a closed off closet with hidden push latch door. Storage that doesn't interrupt the wall.

I'd hang plants like they did in the 70s. :)

I think we'd be more help if you sketched up the layout a little bit. It's hard to see what's what.

You appear to have a very cool front door. I just felt like throwing that in there.
