Total kitchen reno, help please!
Comments (7)Awesome thanks for the feedback everyone! Houseful, yes I am avoiding structural changes as much as possible. We have a log home and are unwilling to cut it up too much, so whatever doors and windows and major walls are there, are there to stay and none will be added. DH refuses to even consider making more. So that's why my current layout took me months to plan, also because I really want the range in the island so I can look into both the LR (there is a door at the far end of the DR looking into LR) and the mudroom while I cook. I was keeping it open because DH will want to bring it small projects to work on in there, and we might out in a small table for the kids' arts & crafts, and that way I can keep an eye on everything while in the kitchen. Dancingsams what copper finish is on your hood? After getting samples we are going with the Antique Copper, it looks so pretty in person and does NOT show marks as the brushed and polished samples do. Can I ask you for your hood specifics? Size, island/wall, blower etc? I've only seen these online but fell in love before even planning the rest of the kitchen. There is a picture online of a brushed copper wall hood with lip band, "straps" and rivets, and I want that exact design in an island hood and the Antique Copper. Quote so far is 6k and I have nothing to compare it too... Does that sound right to you? Thank you so much for all the feedback!...See MoreTotal redo of kitchen and living area - open to any ideas please!
Comments (20)Thanks you Sena and benjesbride. I came up with this before I saw what you posted so I will look more closely at your details. I really like the idea of the dining area where I have it if I can make it work. It just feels more natural with those windows. Also, in my plan I have cut down the pantry to just the back wall of shelves. Will maybe need to use a sliding door there. Barn door? So trendy! :) I would love a wall there so I can also have coat hooks on the other side and as a bit of a barrier when you enter the house. Also, the weird cabinets behind the arm chairs are there because I couldn't figure out how to put a wall there - which is existing and must stay. There is no overhang on my island drawing but irl there will be - probably 12 inches. I know - less than recommended but it's what we have now and it works. So - does this layout work? Is it too tight? The furniture is also the dimension of what we currently have. I don't love the layout of the upper cabinets - but not sure how to arrange them. Thanks for looking and reading!...See MoreOpening up the kitchen to family room in our 1929 cottage...
Comments (11)First, thank you for your kind words This is a very sweet old house and our goal is to do nothing to mess it up, for sure. We did a careful kitchen remodel before we moved in, mostly leveling the floor and ceiling and undoing some odd things that had been done over the years. We would be very careful with this as well and so I wanted to mine the depths of experience in the Houzz community. Our first grandchild, who will be two in July, has made us appreciate that being unable to see into the family room is more than a minor inconvenience. I believe that a thoughtful approach could produce a room that looks like it has always been more open. Taking the photo a little further to the right shows that the stairs are not an issue. The landing would not be affected. As you can see, a previous owner tried to make more of a connection between the rooms by adding a funny internal window. We don’t find it helpful, just odd. Other than the contractor needing to go under the kitchen floor to look for the proper footings and adding them if needed, I don’t think there would be a structural problem....See MoreKitchen Reno - Enough space for a table?
Comments (19)@Jennifer K @mama goose_gw zn6OH @Design Girl Here are the updated plans that we are close to locking in. What do you think? The fridge is far, but I am not sure what a better solution would be. We don't want to cut into the size of the butlers pantry. The large window looks out into our driveway towards our neighbor's house (into their kitchen). It is not the best view for privacy so have some regret about not putting the range on that wall with the sink against a wall (or island but not a fan) The island is 86x53."5 - Will I have any issues with a Marble slab?...See MoreRuby Makuch
