We liked it. I think the issue is that most movies seem geared toward 14 yr old boys with action adventure and all kinds of violence and technology. The Post offered none of that.

I liked it. There were a lot of b\"Big" movies this year........some of which i had no real desire to see, Like The Shape of Water, Get Out (although I did tape Get Out and when I'm in the right frame of mind, will watch it.) I think it wasn't that big because it was just a rehash of an old story Meryl Streep was up for an Oscar and while she was very good (always is) it was not an Academy Award part.

We really enjoyed The Post as well. We never go to the theater, preferring to wait for movies to come out on demand. DD and I are both really looking forward to A Wrinkle in Time coming out on demand next week. Even as an adult, I loved Madeleine L'Engle's time trilogy and they were some of DD's childhood favorites.

I enjoyed it very much but my friends thought it was meh. I swear they don’t like any movie unless Judi Dench is in it.

We both enjoyed it a lot. Saw it a few weeks ago on demand, as well as the newest Jumanji movie. I also caught up with Murder in the Orient Express and watched a couple of other recent Oscar nominees. The one I rather liked was Lady Bird.

There are very few movies we actually go to the theater to see anymore. I agree with Annie. It seems the really interesting movies don’t stay in the theaters long and the ones that do are filled with violence, action characters, are a kiddie cartoon, or a real blockbuster (haven’t seen one of those in a while).

We love sci-fi so usually the only movies we see in the theater are the Star Wars, comic/action hero type. We leave the service dog home, though, because those movies are so incredibly LOUD. She will tolerate the noise, but it just doesn't seem fair.

We watched The Post last night. It was an interesting and enlightening movie. I always have to go look up all of the characters after a movie like that to see how they evolved after the pivotal event depicted in the movie.

We watched tonight. After this discussion, I found it at the machine at the grocery store today, We enjoyed it very much, and remember the events all too well.

I have a small beef with it. I hate hate hate the 'dark' scenes in many movies. As in, faintly lit offices and other settings. All dramatically under-lighted scenes. Ridiculous.

sushipup1 -- I hear you about the lighting. The sound can also be overly 'meaningful'. A lot of movies about WWII also employ a 'cigarette smog effect' for interior shots.

I was impressed with how fast they got this into production to champion the vital *Constitutional* role of journalism.

Never heard of it! Maybe the conclusions should be more about their marketing efforts than the theater audiences.

The movie irritated me. It starts with main two characters calling each other out for ignoring stories they shouldn’t have ignored, in the name of friendships. IOW, they weren’t above looking the other way when it was convenient. The turning point came when Katharine Graham was confronted with a lie that had a DIRECT impact on her life. Had it not, she might have not authorized the printing of incriminating classified govt papers.

Yes, this was the time of Watergate. But being that Nixon was particularly vicious against The Post after classified papers were uncovered, I’m not so sure that journalists weren’t looking for stories, in retaliatory fashion rather than in the name of finding truth. More like finding stories that corroborated he was a d@ck. But why weren’t they working on those stories before? Because it wasn’t convenient. Not suggesting for a second Nixon was an angel but not convinced journalists were/are as noble career people as they should be.

And even these days, we seem to get more news for John Q Public and his iphone than from true journalists. And what do news people do? Report who tweeted what. This morning, my news station spent about 5 min. on the Roseanne story listing what she tweeted, and what others tweeted in response. So they went to Journalism School for that????

While I believe in a global economy, I was appalled when the law was changed to allow non-U.S. companies to own U.S. media. I agree that the advent of the 24-hour news cycle was the beginning of the downfall of widespread real news. There's so much filler, that real news cannot break through except for the most extreme stories. Plus, journalists are allowed to express opinions in their stories, so the reader/listener has to try to tease out what's fact and what's opinion.

Chisue, I think K decided to betray (poor choice of word as not betraying but telling the truth) McNamara when she recalled her son had gone to Vietnam and her ‘friend’ never told her about report, risks, etc. That lie hit home. I wouldn’t say she did it out of vindictiveness but once she realized her friend wasn’t really her friend, it was easy to make the right choice. I must remind myself this is a MOVIE and I don’t know if sequence of events was as portrayed.

as to Tom Hanks and Meryl, I’m so used to excellence, that I shrugged their performances as another day in excellenceville. HST, those characters didn’t seem as complicated so no huge challenge.

I remember the days of reading W and pouring thru every event attended by KG in DC and the NYC social royalty.

I had so much of Watergate and the surrounding stories at the time that I really didn't have any interest. I could have watched it on a plane but chose Murder on the Orient Express, Darkest Hour, and the final Maze Runner.
