Post and Lintel
When horizontal beam meets post, the combination pulls its weight in a home
Post and lintel construction has been used for centuries. It consists of vertical posts combined with an overhead horizontal beam, or lintel, that spans the space between them. Where there is an opening in a wall, such as a window or door, post and lintel construction is used to support the weight of the roof or floors above.
This rough-hewn post and lintel construction is a design highight in this room.
A carved-wood lintel transfers the weight of the roof to the stone walls surrounding the wall rather than to the door itself.
A lintel over a window is also known as a header.
Exposed doorway lintels contrast with the surrounding stone—the posts are hidden in the walls.
This lintel adds support above the hollow walls that house these pocket doors.
