Flowering Fruit Tree Blooms Changed Color
Comments (5)Thanks you very much for your responses and interest in helping me solve this mystery. The Ornamental Pear doesn't bear fruit that I can see. I see the cherries on the Ornamental Cherry tree because they're Robin favorites for eating. We've thought and thought about what's changed in the last few years. The only thing that's changed in that spot is my father had to have a new septic tank installed on the far side from 2 trees right next to the Pear tree 3-4 years ago. They weren't sure they could save the tree but were able to cut a minimal amount of roots/limbs off one side to dig and install the new tank. The tree didn't show any set back the next year or since. They were especially careful about saving the tree. I'm assuming the tree roots have grown into the septic area. I also assume something in what roots now take up from soil around is different in nutrient content. I'm ignorant about biology of how that would effect color of blooms but must assume both digging and septic installation changed soil structure and soil composition/texture around the tree. That septic installation could be the obvious answer to changes in the tree even as far as blossom color. Can't think of another environmental change that's occurred. You ask when trees were fed. I'm assuming my father fed them when they were planted in 1979 and maybe a few years after that. I don't think they've been "fed" in many a year. Tops of these trees exceed height of second floor roofline and their combined expanse is 2/3 entire length of main part of 2 story colonial. I don't have a camera and if I did I wouldn't know how to post them. Now that the rain has removed most of the blossoms guess I'll have to wait for next year to see if color change returns. Wouldn't want to do anything to damage the tree itself by experimenting on a 29 year old tree. Well, thank you again for your responses. Comments (15)Oh My Goodness, this board moves Fast! LOL I was busy all yesterday tending to the untended areas of the garden so my apologies for not getting here sooner. This board, all of you who've responded.....I've gained more information from your responses than I have doing research on the web! Maybe I'm not putting in the correct search terms but you all have provided me so much more information....THANK YOU! I can't get a close-up picture of the white Iceberg roses beccause the Arbor has exploded in new vines and leaves ... no buds yet. But I did take a comparison pic yesterday of the Pink Iceberg next to a couple Jasmine flowers....maybe that will help? I've also taken pics of the main trunk of the Iceberg as it is today...and my neighbor has assured me the cuttings I took from her rose is "Iceberg Climber"....and indeed, what I got was a wonderful, fast growing, almost disease-free WHITE Iceberg Climbing Vine. I've almost talked myself into pulling out the propagated pieces of the PINK Iceberg from the huge planter and getting them settled in another planter, not as large. Something about the Joseph's Coat with little white roses as fill-in was in my mind's eye against the backdrop of a large TerraCotta Umbrella and white patio furniture. Ah well....the best laid plans and all that. :) I am hoping it's not the wrong time to pull out the PINK Iceberg and transplant it in another planter? Thank you so very much for the compliments on my Arbor. She's one of my favorites and I tend to her daily 10 months out of the year. Those other two months I give her a break and let her go wild. She gets it out of her system and then she's ready to be trimmed so she can produce a beautiful focal point for me. Comments (6)I have a Kousa Dogwood, planted about 8 years ago at around 5ft tall. It's about 12 feet tall now, with branches that spread out fairly wide. I planted it myself, probably explaining the slow growth rate. My landscaper worked on it a little last year, and the growth seems to have finally gotten going. The white flowers come out at perhaps the in mid-May. This annoyed me at first, because all of the other flowering trees seem to do their thing in April, and the Kousa comes out after the party is already over. It does look nice though. In the summer, it's a cute tree, with nice gentle green leaves. One initially gets the impression that the Fall color will be nothing, when it suddenly turns a deep red. My landscaper just transplanted it to a wider section of my yard where it looks more appropriate. I hope it lives!...See MoreClematis change flower color from white to purple this year
Comments (86)@Bella rosa -- Clematis can be extremely frustrating that way. They are often mislabeled, AND the appearance of the blooms is very sensitive to environmental conditions and health of the plant. There are several varieties, for instance, that will bloom with doubled blooms at some times and singled blooms at other times -- and flower color on younger or stressed-out plants is often paler than on older or healthier plants, something that can be especially obvious on the striped varieties. Give yours a couple of years before you make any conclusions about its "true" appearance!...See Moreginny12
