Outdoor Kitchen build

I moved into a brand new home that has a nice covered patio in the back. I have an older (replaced all burner, heat plates, grill grates) Master Gorge grill that I've been using and it works like a charm.

However, the bottom and sides of the metal frame have started rusting out. I plan on taking it apart and making a new frame for it.

I need some advice on building the new surround for it. I want to make it out of wood since i have a ton of Baltic birch left over from a previous build. I envision something like this:

I could even add wheels and make it mobile like this one:

My concerns are how do make the surround fire proof?

My main reasons for choosing to make a new wood surround are:

Cost- I can make this for $0.

Time- This is a weekend build

One last thing... I'm sure i'm going to get a lot of hate for choosing to take a part the grill... I know Master Forge isn't exactly the best when it comes to outdoor grills. But i'd like to make use of what I have and I've fine tuned it to my liking.
