What kind of 'look' are you going for? Or is your motivation strictly functional? If your motivation is functional, I'd think either would work, but that at stove-top level, 30" would look more appropriate. The extra 3" on either side at the back of the stove would probably bother me much more than a 3" 'shortfall' at hood level. Jut my personal opinion, but if you're going for a 'commercial look' though, I'd rethink the idea. The combination of stainless range, splash and hood makes for a 'vertical column' effect, which might make your range look too narrow to carry off a commercial style, which I tend to think of as more 'chunky.'

Hi fori, thanks for posting that. It's definitely food for thought for me because I'm similar about wanting to remodel a kitchen where I'm living. I've rented enough places and cooked in my parents and in-laws kitchens, and if the layout isn't something that seems natural to me, then it starts to bug me over time. Until I read your comment, I hadn't realized that I've been subconsciously holding that assumption: that whoever comes after us, will be remodeling the kitchen anyway to suit themselves. Given the points about ductless/ducting, I'd like to ask this question, even though it wasn't my initial posting question: Immediately behind the range wall is a 3-season, enclosed porch (lots of windows, sparsely furnished with patio-type furniture). The easiest technically would seem to be simply duct out of the house into that space. If we put in a ducting hood that vented into the 3-season porch, would that look worse to a future buyer than no duct at all? Would an inspector look askance at that? I'm not up on all the code for how you are allowed to vent range hoods for electric ranges. (While that means the smell and grease would end up out in that porch, it's a lot more "rustic" and easier to clean and air out than the kitchen.) Thanks again!

mpagmom- Good points brought up here..I feel the same way you do--my head says to choose induction for safety and function, too. It really makes sense and I would kick myself in 5 years when everybody will be getting one and I went with the old school electric knowing I could have had state of the art. I really am not a 'keep up with the Joneses' type, that is not what I mean, but I truly believe it is the way of the future (like cell phones, microwaves, TVs and indoor plumbing!) unless someone down the road finds some terrible hidden flaw in the design (like it causes cancer or something awful like that). And I don't think I would let a few negative reviews about broken panel fixes sway me too much cause there are so many more positives out there. But on the other hand, that Bosch is really so darn cute and especially seems so well made and thought out. It really has everything I like, I would be happy with it, because it is no comparison to what I have now. I am agonizing so much because think that this will prbly be the last stove I ever own--my present 'Hardwick Classic 100' is 27 years old and still going strong, not broken but basic and just looks bad! I so wish Bosch made a slide in induction. I'm sure they are working on it, probably one with knobs, too! Well, at least they do have a freestanding electric WITH controls on the front (knobs even), if I need to resort to that in the end. I really need to have that feature (reaching issues because I am very short and a little more endowed up front, if u kno what I mean) and always prefered knobby look to touch screen anyway. But I am willing to go with the touch screen for progress's sake, with what's out there presently in induction. I am kind of strapped for time as I need to pick out something in the next couple of weeks. We are getting our countertops replaced and I want to have the stove picked out so they can view the installation instructions when making the template. I am so trying to avoid any problems. I didn't know about the drawer issue, but I do not have full overlay drawers, so hopefully that will not be an issue. I will have to look into it though, so thanx for the heads-up. We are having our cabinets refaced and a new one built to add on as a penninsula, so the cabinet guy might be able to help. And speaking of form, I hear ya about the Profile eyeball/football window--I really dislike that also!! But GE does have a good track record with ranges, and it is on sale at sears for 450 less than the Kenmore slide in so I am telling myself to live with it, if that is how I end up going. (I do like the look of the Kenmore better, though--maybe Friends and Family sale in a couple of weeks will bring it down more) I already went over budget picking out a fridge (Kenmore also) and that really needs to stay b/c of size constrictions there. I'm just really nervous now about the installation process so really need to talk to someone in the store about my concerns. This remodel has been in the works for literally years, and I just want to make all the right decisions. But there always will be something to wish for that doesn't exist yet, no matter what the timing is. Heck, I never dreamed I would be considering an induction range in the plan, but at least can still make that choice at this point. If you have time on your side, maybe you should wait a few more months and see what evolves. The Bosch Pro electric just came out, so it will still be around. Here's a photo of Bianco Antico with a mosaic like yours. Look beyond the perfect color match and notice that both the granite and backsplash have strong patterns. This look is called "paisley shirt and plaid pants" in the kitchens forum. It's an equal competition for attention, giving a very spotted appearance. Now look at a calmer pattern combo. It's still contemporary but it doesn't distract or compete with the granite. Most often the busy mosaics are paired with a plain quartz countertop. I was surprised you found all those examples on Houzz and I wonder if they're older remodels. I'm sure designers got excited over the new stick mosaics, but they are already fading in some markets. You can take your idea of mixing traditional and modern a little too far by swinging way out to the other extreme of contemporary with your materials. It doesn't necessarily make for a transitional home by doing so. < Emphasizing that. Your raised panel cabs are very traditional, so a happy medium would be a quieter mosaic backsplash like the one above. Larger format subway tile in a color that matches the light cocoa colors. Mosaics of one color. 2 x 8" tiles, possibly in glass. Glass is very pretty with BA. There are hoods that are mostly chimney with a flat control panel. I think a wider chimney would be good for your space. Then what about tiling? Your cabinets don't go to the ceiling so you'll probably stop the tile at the hood. I think a straight hood will look cleaner. You did good with your bathroom but I think you may be missing the mark in your kitchen.
