opinions about backsplash behind range

I think I'm going to do a SS backsplash behind the range, under the hood (also SS) and tile for backsplashing elsewhere. The wall that will house range is fairly open, and the hood is european style (chimney). The hood is 36" wide and the range is 30", so I'm not sure if the SS splash should be 30" or 36". My initial thought is that the splash should be the same width as the range, and the hood will just be wider than them, but would it look better if the splash matched the hood instead?

This is a rough mock up with the splash matching the hood- seems weird: (I also haven't decided how high the tile will go)

When making a vertical divide on the backsplash like you are planning, it reminds me of the old fashioned free-standing hi-low range unit (oven above/cooktop/oven below) we got rid of.

I'd like an all tile backsplash better than the part SS that you are planning. Tile all across that wall will show off your really neat vent hood better than backing that section with more SS. JMO

Here is the tile...I will lay them vertically behind the range. I bought some 2"x2" coordinating glass tiles to make up some of the space since these are not quite long enough (I have 30" from my range to the range hood although part of that is hidden by the 5" riser on my range). If you're big on midcentury modern, which these cabs invoke (because they're rather teak-like and the grain runs left-right, if I recall correctly) I'd suggest something that looks like hand-made rough ceramics (but NOT distinctly ethnic). Even if most of the tiles are smooth up to date rectangles or squares, a horizontal strip of something more earthy might work. Your challenge will be to merge whites with the browns. Or is the "white" more creamy? I also like the idea of some kind of herringbone to add an angle without going Moorish. If you could stand real rough stone (put stainless behind stove and use lots of sealer on the rest of the wall?), irregular narrow chunks of stone massed in the space, which is common look in tile store displays right now, might add distinction. Perhaps same color tone as your countertop but in rough stone?

I am linking a thread which discusses when the hood is wider than the range, should the backsplash behind the range be the width of the hood or the width of the range. The conclusion seems to depend on whether there are upper cabinets on either side of the hood. If there are upper cabinets, then you should match the backsplash width to the hood width. Otherwise, you will have a 3" sliver on either side of the hood of empty wall between the edge of the hood and the cabinets. Definitely not behind the fridge, just a waste of money as it will never be seen. For the range, are you talking about the whole wall behind the range, down to the floor and up to the vent hood? I would not put backsplash tile down to the floor, again just a waste of money but from countertop height up to vent hood, yes.

What kind of 'look' are you going for?
Or is your motivation strictly functional?

If your motivation is functional, I'd think either would work, but that at stove-top level, 30" would look more appropriate. The extra 3" on either side at the back of the stove would probably bother me much more than a 3" 'shortfall' at hood level.

Jut my personal opinion, but if you're going for a 'commercial look' though, I'd rethink the idea. The combination of stainless range, splash and hood makes for a 'vertical column' effect, which might make your range look too narrow to carry off a commercial style, which I tend to think of as more 'chunky.'

good thoughts. My motivation was mostly functional, and I'm not opposed to all tile. I actually was thinking of doing some sort of tile "art" on that more open wall- almost mural like, but I was concerned about keeping tile clean. I know that most people say the tile behind their range is fine, but my dad thinks I'm crazy to try it. As for a tile mural/design, this is a poorly formed thing in my head, so I cant even imagine how to sketch it yet. But I'm also worried about things getting too busy, especially with an open potrack hanging there.

A stainless steel backsplash may not be hard to clean, according to some. But I'm tellin' ya a few spots of grease or a running drip of water is MUCH more noticeable on vertically placed stainless steel than on tile (ceramic or other).

A swift swipe quickly cleans tile, but only you know how much wiping AND polishing you are willing to do keep stainless steel spot- and streak free.

You could always do a full Granite backsplash. We decided to do that instead of tile as we couldn't decide whether to do a mural or not. We had all SS appliances and went with a Palladio granite which has multiple different colors with fossilized stones so it made a great backsplash. Good luck!
