Kitchen sink location

In our kitchen design we have centered the sink on the island but wondering if move it to be centered with hood and cooktop instead?

Any suggestions or thoughts on which would look better.

It's actually better for the sink to be offset from the cooktop (not centered). That is because if someone is at the cooktop, and also someone is at the sink, they won't be touching behinds. I might make the sink actually more offset than it is now, so that the placement looks more purposeful. That will also give you a somewhat larger uninterrupted counter space on the island.

I would move the sink as far to the left (oven end) as needed to get at least 42" of prep space on the refrigerator end of the island.

The DW should be on the ovens end of the island on the other side of the sink from the prep space.

Since all three primary work zones (Prep, Cooking, Cleanup) will be in that one area of your Kitchen, be sure that aisle is at least 48" between the refrigerator handle and the island's counter edge.

Copper is a lot lighter than cast iron and I would bet that all the piping attached to it above will support it without much trouble. If you can fit a pipe cutter in the space it's probably best to use that for a clean cut. If you use a sawsall you will see if the blade starts to bind. If it's really binding you know the pipe is putting some downward pressure on the blade. In that case you might want to attach the device you mentioned. Sorry, I've used them and can't remember the name. If there are any horizontal pipes in the cellar that attach to the stack maybe you could wedge something under them to help support the stack. The bigger problem you might have is how you will get the 4x2 wye in place if you can't raise the upper section or drop the lower section. Maybe someone can tell you if there is a legal way to clamp in a wye if this turns out to be a problem.

Depth of Peninsula ?

Will you be using the space under the peninsula for cabinets? If so, then you're starting with a base of 24 inches + overhang on the working side. The least-deep stools with backs will be about 20" deep, and comfy backless stools will come in at ~17 inches deep. So add that depth to the 24" + overhang base (unless you're not building the peninsula on cabinets). You might want to decide on back vs. backless stools beforehand, as the height as well as the depth of your stools may become important to you. Will you want to have a wide open unobstructed view, or do you want the stools to face into the kitchen and make it feel more intimate? The question of whether it is difficult to move around a large peninsula, or whether it seems to be in the way, will be determined more in context (aisle size minimum 36") than in the abstract by the size of the peninsula. The depth of your peninsula will, however, have an impact on whether you can wipe it all clean from one side, or whether you have to go around and clean the far side from the other side (family room side). I find it aggravating to have to go around, but I am short and I have short arms. YMMV if you are more willowy than stumpy.

Prep sink in island...is it worth it?

I agree the answer to *your* question depends on *your* layout. That said, on the advice of these fine folk here I too put in a prep sink and I can scarcely believe I ever wondered about it. It is so much better than sliced bread I cannot even begin to explain.... I think of it as a double sink with a lot of space, elbow-room, in between. And if there are to be multiple cooks, be sure there is adequate space for two to work at the sink at the same time. Ours is a little tight but it's fine; but I hadn't considered that in advance. I only regret not making one of the sinks even larger! We do vegetables and fruit here and I just don't think it is possible to get enough sink space. My 24" SS and 36" (I think; can't remember) "super single" are only barely enough.... In short, depends on your kitchen and cooking style but for this heavy prepper with lots of cleanup as well (and insufficient helpers!), two is enormously appreciated.

By code, we had to have outlets on either side of the window. I don't know anything about the 24" from the sink rule. Our outlets are more than 24" away. We are still under construction, but the electrical has passed. I wish I had gone with the garbage disposal push button that the electrician suggested. I was not familiar with it at the time. I had always had a wall mounted switch. Now I see where a push button would have helped with aesthetics. Oh well!

Thanks! With the sink centered we currently have 42” on each side (it’s a huge island). We also have 50” between oven wall and island.

Sounds like you have a 10' island (give or take), as do I.

42" on each side may not be sufficient (but this really depends on your cooking habits and needs). In my kitchen, I have a dish-drying rack on one side of the sink; a good one is at least 2' wide, so that leaves ~1.5' empty on that side for prep - which is pretty useless (to me).

That leaves 42" of prep area on the other side of the sink.

I usually like to prep at least 8" away from the sink (as I don't want splashes of water, dish-soap (or hand-soap) and dirt on the salad veggies that I'm prepping). So that would leave you at about 36" (3') of prep area. If that's sufficient for you (which it may be) - that's great. I personally would be super-frustrated.

Right now, in my 10' kitchen-island, I have a very-non-centered sink which gives me 68" of prep area (or, practically, 60" (5') if I'm subtracting the 8" splash-zone I mentioned earlier). The other side is fully occupied with a dish-drying-rack. This setup is actually border-line insufficient to me too, but I've had to work with what I had... still, I'm very grateful to the previous owner (who built this house) for NOT centering the sink in the island...
