backsplash tile behind range

My range is 30" wide and my range hood is 35.5" wide (sold as a 36" hood...but in reality, slightly smaller). I bought three 12" x 24" glass tiles to put behind the range. The glass tile sizes are not consistent and the 3 laid together with about 1/8" grout line make about 35.75" wide. Do you think it will matter that the glass tiles peek out to the side of the range hood just slightly? My contractor thinks he can trim the glass tiles, but I am worried about the possibility of breakage and the sharp edge after trimming just one tile just a 1/4". We plan to run these tiles up to the bottom of the range hood.
